i thought the default speed for AMD Athlon 64 3400+ is 2.4 GHz 200 x 12..
But my new 3400+ is running at 200 x 11.

what is going on here?

you have the clawhammer cored one, which runs at only 2.2ghz. the newcastle runs at an extra 200mhz to make up for the loss of 512k L2 cache. so basically, nothings going on here.

Clawhammer preforms marginally better in doom III. I think in other applications it's the other way around. I'm not sure though.

well, they're different, but not different enuff to be noticable at all, even in benchmarks. they each are insignificantly better in certain benchmarks then others, but other then that, you'd have to call it a tie.

The clawhammer pwnz. Get the claw with the extra L2 an OC overclock to around 2500 mhz

Apparently, you've got a clawhammer.
By the way, can anyone point me to some clawhammer vs newcastle benchies?

not much performance difference.
i'll tell you how much difference i thought there was between them.. : I went with the Newcastle 3200 over the ClawHammer 3200 because the NC was cheaper and was 200MHz faster.

I figure it's all the same........ meh

AMD cpu's need clock speed, not cashe. If this were Intel then it would be the clawhammer hands down.

AMD's processor speeds aren't as high as Intel's, so a 200 Mhz change is greater proportionally, obviously.

In my experience, the lower cache only affects certain business and deep calculation apps. Cache is generally more expensive to produce, so the chip is more expensive. I'd go with the Newcastles; it was in AMD's master plan anyway.
