Hey you guys, I have tested and come to the conclusion my processor is dead (i have 2). I am under warranty with AMD, but I'm afriad they won't RMA it because I currently have Arctic Silver 5 on the top of it.

Should I be concerned? If so, what should i do?

I believe they only require you to send in the processor, not the heatsink....should I remove the AS5?

whats the big deal getting some 70% rubbing alcohol, some wipes and q-tips and removing the AS ? Its not like its stuck there forwever...just clean the thing already and RMA it. You dont even be careful since its already broken.

I'd use 91%, and clean it GOOD!

I rma'd 1 athlon xp I built for a family member and I used AS3 and cleaned it well and it was fine. I sent the heatsink and everything back in and they didn't ask. You don't void the warranty if you don't use their heatsink. I used an aftermarket heatsink. I think they would be suspicious if i had cracked the core or something. I also warrantied a P4 that wouldn't pass prime95 at default specs. It also had AS2 on it and it was taken no questiions asked.

You used a better paste, so the same thing would have happened otherwise. Go for it.

Yeah, I don't think anyone faults you for using the best thermal product on the market...should go smooth provided it's clean.

The best thermal transfer product on the market is fluoride toothpaste. For all of 30 minutes, anyway. Then it starts to dry. Vegimite works well too!

i mean... to be completely ethical.. you did use AS5 when it specifically says that that voids the warranty...

but i think it's a gray area...

since you didn't physically damage the chip (right?) then it should be okay to wipe it off and RMA it.

Ethically, I'd say you're ok. I'm sure they tell you not to use aftermarket grease as they have no control over how you apply it or even if what you're using is really thermal grease! They're just covering themselves against people who do a poor job with poor material. I'm sure AMD also knows that properly applied high quality grease like AS5 or Ceramique will perform better than a stock thermal pad.

Important Reminder:
Due to the unique shape and sizes of the particles in Arctic Silver 5's conductive matrix, it will take a up to 200 hours and several thermal cycles to achieve maximum particle to particle thermal conduction and for the heatsink to CPU interface to reach maximum conductivity. (This period will be longer in a system without a fan on the heatsink or with a low speed fan on the heatsink.) On systems measuring actual internal core temperatures via the CPU's internal diode, the measured temperature will often drop 2C to 5C over this "break-in" period. This break-in will occur during the normal use of the computer as long as the computer is turned off from time to time and the interface is allowed to cool to room temperature. Once the break-in is complete, the computer can be left on if desired.

I believe that AMD's 3 year retail warranty is void if you use a heatsink other than the one provided in the retail box. I am not sure about OEM chips though, other than having to go through the vendor.
