My annoying neighbors downstairs

So the walls (and floors) are very thin in my apartment complex. You can hear conversations between floors fairly easily. I know this because the couple (now family) who lives downstairs used to fight all the time. Never filed a noise complaint against them. Now they have a kid who I cries every night.

Fortunately, none of this bothers me. Unfortunately, the sound of me walking at any hour past 11pm causes them to use the ol' broomstick on the ceiling. They did knock on my door once around when I was watching youtube on my PC without my headset. But anyways, all I have to do is walk, and I get the broomstick. The fact that they're fobs, argue frequently, and have crying kids in tow and still have the nerve to be uppity about the 'noise' I'm making makes me want to go apeshit on them sometimes. That, and I think they keyed my car, but I don't know for sure.

Anyways, I'm about to move soon, so me and my car will be in a secure location. Any friendly suggestions from ATOT?

EDIT: Also, the reason I'm up late most of the time is because I'm either studying or doing research. These fucking jerkoffs...

You don't wanna know what I would have done to them for being hypocrites like that. That's bull shit!

I couldn't live in a shit hole like that with thin walls. I like my 5.1 audio setup and how be damned if some snot nose bastard will tell me to turn it down. That broomstick would be right up their ass!

Sounds like a tough one. Good on you for moving! I totally understand your frustration and anger. I have noise issues with a couple of my neighbors. They are just flat out in denial. Some people are almost impossible to deal with. I called the cops one time after 1:30AM, I am not sure they came, I figured they did. Things got better for a while, IIRC, they did improve the last couple of years (I've been here a long time!), but this year they are off the wall again with the noise at all hours (TV and I think video game addicts). Then there's the guy with the machine, I don't know what it is... When I asked him about it he said "what noise?" It seems to be on 30+% of the time.

People are self centered assholes. You can bet that if you had countered to them all the noise they made, they would have pulled the "but they are kids" card.

Nothing drives me nuts more than hearing a loud neighbor. I sold a place just to get away from a terribly built condo with loud neighbors.

The place I'm working on now I put insulation in all the walls in the whole bed room, and floors and ceilings, and sound board behind the sheet rock on some of the walls and ceilings of other rooms. Nice and quite (and cozy). Of course I live alone now in a 3 story house I bought, but it really helps outside noise, and plus who knows when some day I'll have family or something living with me. Or just guests. It's incredible how much more relaxed and peaceful you feel.

Anyway, people battle for so long, and deal with the stress, but it's really worth it just to go out and do something serious and not have to worry about it. Whether moving, or buy a place to work on, or get a house. Even getting a house you can deal with a loud neighbor. But some sound proofing and you're in total serenity and bliss.

If that's what you're after you should ask 4chan. I doubt we'd be allowed to give you any good friendly suggestions here.

I have the same problem with thin floors and loud neighbors. Sometimes they just keep talking until 1.30 - 2. 00 am. The problem is that they are just loud enough to keep me awake, but not really loud enough to justify calling the cops or file a complaint. So I just lie awake in bed every night and silently plot my revenge.

if they're banging on their ceilings every time you make noise, I'd return the favor and do the same thing every time they make noise.

My neighbor used to game late into the night and we could here his bass thru the walls. I could tell what game it was (Unreal 2k3) so i asked him his tag and then joined up and completely owned him several nights in a row. Got him to drop gaming forever.

Uh, that issue can be fixed with ear plugs.

This is the reason my last place was a pre-war condo highrise with all concrete construction. I never heard a peep from my neighbors courtesy lots of thick concrete, brick, and structural terra cotta block.

Previous place had a terrible woman upstairs who would blast the same song on repeat for an hour late in the night and walk around in heels incessantly (on hardwood).

Suggestion: move to a nicer place, or thank god they aren't above you. I lived in a place for a year with a fob family above me and holy fuck were they loud. Stomping around, running, yelling.

Check your local laws in regards to noise, then play this during those hours on repeat while wearing noise cancelling headphones

We used to live in the upstairs portion of a house. The landlords lived downstairs. He worked days, she stayed at home with their 4 year old. They were usually in bed by 9. I worked late evenings, and the wife worked overnights. We had hardwood floors, and our living room was right above their bedroom. So needless to say there were always noise complaints to us no matter how quiet we were just due to the situation.

What they didn't stop and consider though was that the ENTIRE day while the wife was trying to sleep, you could hear their kid running from one end of the house to the other end, almost non stop.

THUMP
THUMP THUMP THUMP thump thump thump thump ...pause... thump thump THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP repeat for 4-5 hours solid. Pretty sure that kid probably runs marathons now.

I hate to break it to all of you, no one is going to arrest anyone for a noise disturbance over a crying baby.

Pick where you live better or suck it up if you can't.
