I know I've had some less than kind words to say about non mobile Linux OSes. I suppose I'm eating some of my words.


So I decided to try CentOS server as a NAS on some spare parts for now. It took awhile as I'm not fluent with Linux, but I finally got things set up the way I want them and I'll admit that it's pretty nice. I was getting Tired of FreeNAS (now NAS4Free). It seems to be going downhill in terms of stability and reliability etc.

I tried Windows Home Server 2012 which I think is horrible. Way way way too bloated. And I don't like the fact that it sets up all of these folders and I can't rename or remove them. And then I have to install all this crap on client PCs? give me a break. It's almost like they intentionally decided to fail at combing simplicity and functionality. I'd much rather run XP can click "enable file sharing" than run Windows Home Server.

CentOS is a really nice free OS. I have three servers running CentOS (one for playing with it, a backup server and a intra-web server) without any problem.

I think that Linux is great, but it's way too dificult to use. Sure, when you know all the commands it gets easyer, but specially at the beggining you have to google everything.

Welcome to Linux. I heard a lot about CentOS but never tried it, am running Linux Mint for the past 6-7 years and am happy with it. So far it's on 4 machines.

I feel quite different about Linux - the documentation on the web and the help from others is amazing. Whereas with Windows, the advice found on the web is far too often either incorrect, unnecessary complicated (try the Microsoft support site), or just useless. I find it a lot easier to solve issues with Linux. Moreover, once Linux is installed and all issues resolved, it runs stable and painless (as long as you don't upgrade).
