After spending a few weeks fiddling with the latest Audyssey with an the Onkyo NR5008, I would like to note a few observations (only applies to 2 channel listening).

Note:

My front wall (corners included) and side walls (first reflection point only) are well treated while about 25% of my back wall (half of one corner is treated) is treated. Finally, my ceiling is bare (sadly). All treatments are bass traps.

Here's my setup:
Accuphase DP57 -> Onkyo NR5008 -> Adam S3As and Velodyne DLS-5000R

Observations:

1) After every calibration by Audyssey, I would measure the in room response with REW and RS SPL meter to see the FR from 20-800Hz. Audyssey always roll off my bass by about 5db so I always have to manually adjust my bass trim level after calibration to compensate for the roll off.

2) Audyssey successfully eliminated some bass peaks while the nulls were brought up by a few DBs which brought out more clarity in the bass region. I also noticed a minor improvement on soundstage depth.

3) This is where I find Audyssey unacceptable. On quite a few recordings with Audyssey engaged, I heard crackles (distortion) on my speakers on certain parts of the music which mostly happened on highs. I'm surprised by this since I know the Audyssey reference curve rolls off the highs.

People can chime in on their Audyssey experience here!

EDIT: I found the culprit of the distortion. It seems the additional AD conversion led to the high end distortion. Once I kept everything in the digital domain, the crackles were gone. However, I much prefer the sound signature of my Accuphase DAC which the Onkyo in contrast sounds sterile, dead, and lifeless. This sound signature of the Accuphase carried over with Audyssey engaged but the occasional high end distortions are introduced.

Maybe buy some nicer speakers? I know Bose has some nice ones. I like these, specifically: http://www.amazon.com/Bose-Companio...2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1288998851&sr=1-2

I also think you might have an issue with your cabling. I use MONSTER cables exclusively, and I've always had good luck with them. Between my Sony receiver and my AMAZING Vizio panel, I use these: http://www.amazon.com/Monster-MC-10...3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1288998914&sr=1-3

I use them for some other connections as well and I've never had any problems, although digital is digital (it either gets there or it doesn't, but you can never be too sure lol!)

Holy troll batman!

Op I have no idea but I'm very interested to hear the findings on the audyssey Setup as I am looking to buy a onkyo tx-nr708 or 808 in the very near future!

Is it that hard to set up? I haven't played around with mine yet, and was planning to this weekend.

Wow!!! well done, this would pass for an intelligent comment anywhere else. LOL

OP:
Technical question here. I live in Canada and unless I order from the states, I can't get a cheap sound pressure meter. I own the Onkyo TX-SR607 and have been using the Onkyo calibration microphone with REW. Would this give me reasonably trust-able results?

Have you tried this and if so how does it compare to the results with your radio shack SPL meter?

I'll try to do a comparison when I have time. But the RS meter is only accurate below 800hz.

Perfect, below 800 is my main area of interest. Hopefully the microphone give comparable readings.

I just ordered another sub kit from CSS and a Reckhorn B1 Bass management filter since I only have 2EQ (no sub equalization) . It will be interesting to see how this new kit sound compared to my older kit.
