Mine also came across with a nasty blue background. I found a bigger version (now 200x200 is recommended) and uploaded it as a replacement. I had to delete my existing avatar before the new one would upload.

I wonder if it takes svg now for an avatar? That's what mine originally was, and it would scale better. I guess I'll have to check when I'm on a desktop.

How long did you have to wait? Mine hangs. It stays on "Waiting for forums.anandtech.com" and the status bar looks like it's trying to upload it, but then nothing happens.

Got my old avatar deleted. Replacement won't upload, no matter the format - .ico, .jpg, .gif, .png. Animates progress bar in top right corner for a minute then times out - no change.

Before I deleted my existing avatar, the upload seemed to stall for me too. After deleting my avatar, the upload was effectively instantaneous. Maybe I was just lucky...
