5mm? That's damn tiny, isn't it? Like the circumference of five dimes stacked? I've crapped 8-10 times bigger around than that.

My friend had a kidney stone myself but passed it out. The passing out was not painful at all for him but the pain of having in the kidneys was just too much. Once he was studying with me and suddenly it ached so badly, he fell on the ground and curled up like a baby. I $hit you not, I would have rather been shot.

so have I, but they come out of different err.....holes

also, I would have to make an educated guess that sometimes large consumption of alcohol will sometime move the stone. For example, I was in jacksonville for that big GA-FL game and I drank much more alcohol than I ever did...and I have a feeling it helped move the stone. So, I gonna make a bold statement here and say that regular "healthy" consumption of beer will probably help reduce kidney stone occurance. Basically help move small amounts at a time, instead of one big bulk. That's my assumption, I'm not sure if it has any validity.

Mother of God, 5mm? You sure that isn't 0.5mm?

I cannot imagine them not doing ultrasonic surgery on the damn thing.

It's way worse than giving birth. I'm a man, but I'm sure it is. I had one and luckily it broke up before it came out, but I was in so much pain that night. I thought I was gonna die or something because it hurt! I'm so happy I didn't have to go through part 2 of the pain.

Well, I've had 8 kidney stones. I feel a ton of empathy for your boss.

Passing the stone out is usually not the worse part, but getting the stone to go from the kidney to the bladder can be a mother! Imagine someone standing on a pogo stick on your back. After a while you are drained from the constant pain. I've often hurled from tightening my stomach muscles for so long.

The best advice is to drink so much water that you think you're going to drown. I mean to the point where you don't want to leave the bathroom because you know you'll be back in 5 minutes. Also relaxing the muscles in the stomach and back(not easy to do) while walking can help the stone to move.

I stopped getting kidney stones after I stopped drinking alcohol regularly.

But, stones can be caused by many sources, drinking was just my cause.

BTW-they can be orange(oxalic acid), white(calcium), or black(Iron).

I've had 7, so I know what you're talking about. The pain is unimaginable. You can't sleep, can't concentrate on anything, and the day goes by extremely slowly. Not to mention that you can't tell when you have to urinate because you constant'y feel like you have to piss like a race horse during the entire time (24-48 hours for me), even when you don't have to go at all.

For me, once the stone has entered my bladder, it's like someone suddenly turned off the "overwhelming pain" switch. Everything is still very tender, but the relief is wonderful.

It usually takes me about 24-48 hours to completly pass the stone. I don't wish this on ANYONE.

It is a mineral buildup in your kidneys. Usually, the mineral is calcium, but they can be formed from any mineral.

I had a few bouts of kidney stones. From what nurses who have had both children and kidney stones say, childbirth is a piece o cake. One who said that had twins. Kidney stone are quite uncomfortable.

No, you don't. Trust me. Imagine a razor sharp rock slicing its way through from your kidney to your bladder. It causes a lot of damage, which then usually gets infected (it's your urinary tract after all, so it's not exactly "clean"). This same rock then slices it's way out when it passes out from your bladder to your penis.

5mm is HUGE. We're talking almost a quarter of an inch here... How could that even pass through your urethra? Like Viper said, you sure you don't mean 0.5mm? lol...

Reading through this thread, I hope I never have a kidney stone....

It is almost certainly caused by diet, though. Genetics probably have something to do with it... How your body deals with the excess minerals.

Calcium.. don't eat milk and dairy... iron.. i would imagine don't eat red meats..

Actually, contrary to popular belief, urine is sterile.

I had one that blocked my ureter & they had to put in a stent between the bladder & kidney so my kidney wouldn't die, then I had the lithotripsy to destroy it, then they took the stent out.

Wanted to punch out folks for about 2 months while I had the stent in.

Stent Where the stent went

lithotripter

I came out of the anesthesia 1/2 way during the lithotripsy, felt like I was getting kicked by a horse over & over, then I peed blood for a day & was fine:|

Drink lots of water, it's the best defense, I forgot to for about 6 months

If you manage to "catch" the stone using the filter they give you, you can give it to your doctor and they will do some lab tests and tell you what you should avoid eating. Believe me, I dreded going to the bathroom for days. I was scared to death that thing was gonna be coming out.

I also had to have surgery for a kidney stone. Had the stent placed, and had the stone removed. It was a healthy 7mmx4mm. It was sort of pretty...shiny, faceted...like some weird kind of jewel. Of course they sent it off to the lab so I didn't get to have it made into a ring or anything.

I was just taken to the hospital via ambulance today for my 20th or so stone..this one was particularly bad, especially when my coworkers freaked out. Mind you, my 20th or so in the past year. I never had them before, and I've altered my diet, I drink 1-1.5 gallosn of water a day and follow the diet reasonably. I still get them no matter what. They till me there's nothing else I can do to except deal with it. I have them from sand to 6mm..
Painful but i live with it..
