Recently purchased 512 mushkin 2100ddr ram, OEM AMD 1700xp+ and soltek "purple ver." mobo
... so I overclocked the amd to 1900xp+ without changing any of the default settings, except for fsb of course

I have 3 case fans and a volcano7 heatsink ... but my CPU temp, is still averaging 41C which bothers me because my room smells like burnt toast ..

Currently there is no compound or greese on the cpu, but will this make a drastic decrease in cpu temp?

Oh another question, im not showing rpm for my fans in bios, it is set to zero ... it used to display but not anymore, anyone running a soltek mobo know what the deal is?
....yes the correct cables are plugged in

Thanks people,
Norm

That burnt smell might just be the smell of new electronic components. Your cpu temp of 41c is fine, but if you are not even using the thermal pad that came with your heatsink, get some thermal paste immediately.

That reminds me...

When you're done with an old PC...cut a few holes in the case....squirt in a good bit of lighter fluid...and toss in a lighted match.

you absolutely need some kind of heat conductor between your CPU core and your HSF. get some artic silver immediately if you value your cpu!

hell, for now go to radio shack and buy some cheap thermal grease. apply a REAL thin layer on the cpu core (i always use a credit card to apply it. just put a bead of compound on a corner and then spread it out). attach your heatsink after you have done this. then, go buy some arctic silver at an online store. when it comes in, remove the radio shack stuff, clean the core with 91% isoprobyl alcohol, and follow the instructions at www.arcticsilver.com to apply it.

You just made a big mistake, are you daft? You ALWAYS need a thermal pad or grease, try running your car with no oil, it's the same deal...
