Sucks, but there is hope. My girlfriends Mom's accord was stolen and it was found abandoned after it ran out of gas with a new stereo system and a new spoiler put on it.

Thats awesome!

I had a friend who worked doing car stereo installation get his car stolen. He always took the face plate off his stereo as it was pretty expensive. Well, apparently the thief really wanted to listen to that particular head unit so he brought the stolen car to the shop where my friend happened to be working and asked him if he had a replacement face plate.

When I got to work I asked what was with all the cop cars. Turns out my friend stalled the thief long enough for the police to show up and arrest him. Even the cops were laughing and commenting how lucky my friend was.

Back in College I had my Buick Regal stolen. I was in the process of selling it since I got a different car. Apparently somebody wanted it for free. Still kind of felt violated but I got over it.

That sucks. I had my car "broken" into several times right in my driveway. Either I forgot to lock it, or someone figured out how to unlock it without damaging it. It was a 98 buick, so I don't imagine the security was that great in that era. Second time they stole the garage door opener and left the garage wide open. To this day I wonder if they stole anything inside but I have yet to notice anything missing. They probably planed to come back later, maybe in broad day light while I'm gone to work. Pull up with a moving van and nobody is really going to suspect anything and they could empty it completely.

I was more concerned about the house and my garage than the car at that point so I got a home security system, and disabled the garage door opener and chained the door shut. I need to unchain it from inside to open it now. Even with an auto garage door opener, if you can slide a crowbar or other object under the door it's as easy as just lifting it up.

I think when they noticed all the security stickers around my property and the sign on the lawn they did not return. I still want to put cameras outside some day though.

And I completely understand only having minimal insurance. Insurance is bloody expensive especially before age of 25. When I got my first car I had to put it under my dad's name and on their insurance otherwise it would have been over 5k per year just for basic insurance.

This thread also reminded me, I should really write down my Vin # and license plate number somewhere safe. If ever my car gets stolen it kind of helps to have that info to give to the cops.

It was a 2000 Honda Civic EX Coupe, Taffeta White. Bought it for $4000 back in Jan of 2010 at 116k miles. It was stolen at 168k sometime in the last week while parked on the street. I had the minimum insurance required on the car; liability. It will be a total loss and I will get nothing back. Some of you might think, "Should've had comprehensive auto-insurance..." No. I've owned the car for 4 years. When I bought it, my insurance through my parents plan (which I am still on) was $120/month. Comprehensive was $220+/month. 48 months * 100 premium > $4000 I paid. Even then, the check they could give me will be less than what I paid for the car. Regardless of that...

I have a very strong emotional attachment to that car. It is my first and only car. I have not wanted any other car in any significant way to where I would replace it. I have only thought of adding other cars to the mix, never removing mine. I never thought of selling my car and never planned on it. I planned to keep it for the rest of my life even until it could no longer function. (I would never stop trying to fix it)

We were going to grow old together and now it's gone.

Holy shit, $220 a month for comprehensive coverage? Are you sure you're not conflating comprehensive with collision? I have comprehensive coverage on a Honda Civic with a $0 deductible and I pay $100 per year for that coverage with state farm. Now as for collision coverage, well that probably would have been $100 per month, making it not worth it to me.

What kind of crappy insurance was that? In 2006 I got my license back after 3 years for DUI and bought a ~25k F150 and complete coverage was $255/mo.

That is outrageously high unless the DUI still impacted the price after 3 years.

My brand new $30k F150 was ~$90/mo full coverage and to some people that's still high.

Had mine "borrowed" mid 1980's...POS 1972 Merc. Montego. We were downtown drinking and it was gone when we tried to go home. Filed a police report, cops drives off and this guy pulls up in it. Turns out he has a POS 1972 Montego parked around the corner, same color. Our keys were interchangeable. He was so wasted that he didn't realize he was in the wrong car.

Taffeta White? Isn't she the new Fox News commentator and noted female Tea Party activist so extreme

. . . she makes Michele Bachmann gag on her morning sausage?

Yes it hurt me for 10 years.......

Now I have a Shelby, a Range Rover, and a Polaris RZR insured for about that much per month combined. Don't D&D kids.

When you're 19, male, and live in the US then car insurance is expensive.
