When I was that age my insurance on my Eclipse was just under $300/mo. Admittedly that car cost more than $2,000 but a BMW it was not.

The expensive part is the liability. Comprehensive is relatively cheap.

When you're 19, male, and live in the US then car insurance is expensive.

No, you just happened to have a hard on for medicore, yet most stolen car in the US. Try not getting a civic and see what happens to your rate.

I don't know about mediocre. It works pretty well for me. And, btw, it doesn't do much to my rate. The rate doesn't go down $50-$60/month with comprehensive. It goes down maybe $10-$20/month at the most, if it does go down.

What you may not be aware of is that Comprehensive insurance isn't based upon driving experience or age, but purely the value of the car and where you live... It makes sense because comprehensive covers everything besides car accidents (it does cover if you hit an animal though). It's a calculation on the likelihood of your car being damaged by "acts of god" or "bad luck" vs. your driving experience. So yes collision would unaffordable for you but not comprehensive unless you live in a super rough neighborhood.

When I started driving at 16, almost 17, I paid $125/mo for full coverage on a ~$6k vehicle under my parents plan. I've never paid more than that.

Don't forget theft rates also, escalades and civics both pay through the ass for comprehensive, because they get stolen a lot.

Run yourself a quote for the same year Focus SVT or something like that, you'll see a huge difference (also IIRC foci have immobilizers, very difficult to steal).

And yes, civics are mediocre, purely a transport appliance.

Sorry about your car big T. I know how strong of a bond you can get with a car.

It's usually some kids driving until the gas runs out. I'm hoping you get it back.

Keep your head up brother.

I have a Civic of his generation and the comprehensive rate with a $0 deductible is like $100 or so per year. Basically the rate is so low I could break a windshield once every 4 years and it would pay for itself.

Hey OP, you did contact the police and report it stolen.... RIGHT?

Now I have a Shelby, a Range Rover, and a Polaris RZR insured for about that much per month combined. Don't D&D kids.

Who are you using? I'm paying almost $600 per month on insurance with no accidents or tickets in the past 20 years. I'm beginning to feel ripped off.

$600 PER MONTH? That's over $7000 a year(!!). We pay total of $80/mo in IL for full coverage on A4 Cabrio, S8 and a 911. Both under 30 and no accidents/tickets.

It was a 2000 Honda Civic EX Coupe, Taffeta White. Bought it for $4000 back in Jan of 2010 at 116k miles. It was stolen at 168k sometime in the last week while parked on the street. I had the minimum insurance required on the car; liability. It will be a total loss and I will get nothing back. Some of you might think, "Should've had comprehensive auto-insurance..." No. I've owned the car for 4 years. When I bought it, my insurance through my parents plan (which I am still on) was $120/month. Comprehensive was $220+/month. 48 months * 100 premium > $4000 I paid. Even then, the check they could give me will be less than what I paid for the car. Regardless of that...

I have a very strong emotional attachment to that car. It is my first and only car. I have not wanted any other car in any significant way to where I would replace it. I have only thought of adding other cars to the mix, never removing mine. I never thought of selling my car and never planned on it. I planned to keep it for the rest of my life even until it could no longer function. (I would never stop trying to fix it)

We were going to grow old together and now it's gone.

Are you sure a vehicle's theft rate affects the cost of liability-only insurance? As someone who was 19 a scant 12 years ago, I agree with TridenT re: insurance rates for teenage males is higher. That is actually a pretty well known fact.

Mine went down to it's current low a few months after I turned 25. I started driving with State Farm, but switched to Progressive almost 10 years ago.

OP: I think it is pretty normal to "bond" with your first car, regardless of make/model, but more so for the change and freedom they represent.

Yes, it was stolen. It was not towed (legally). It was parked on a city street and only one company can tow shit that is parked on city streets. I reported it to the police. They checked and it has not been towed or impounded or anything of that sort. They came over to my place and did the report after I called them.

EDIT: I keep thinking that I have parked it somewhere else on the street that I am just not aware of. I keep thinking that but it's probably not true. I don't have the slightest idea as to where that spot would be either.

Car was found. It's trashed inside. They ripped out the radio and destroyed the console in the process. They smoked, burned some carpet, and blah-blah-blah. It was horrendous. I'm tearing down the entire interior and going to do a deep cleaning of every surface.

They didn't leave anything behind except garbage (They must've been on meth to empty so many cigarettes and throw tobacco from them everywhere. So much ash+water. Everything but a pile of shit. It really makes no sense.). They took everything but left me a tarp and an explore Washington State magazine they left in the trunk. They took all my maintenance logs and so forth. Very annoyed.

There's also a random crack in the windshield. And one that constitutes replacement. (It's quite large) Some new dents that are minor.

And the best is that they destroyed the steering column. It steers fine but I cannot adjust it and my ignition system is kind of fucked. I'm going to take the ignition lock cylinder out of it and replace the mechanism that holds it with a new/used one. I just have to find one that will work with my car. (Seriously, they literally took a sledgehammer or a serious foot stomping to that part of the car. It's been broken off. (Notsureifnecessarytohotwiremycar))

Drove to my parents place in Vancouver. Skipped school after picking it up this morning after my morning flight back to Seattle. What a fucking terrible day. My baby has been desecrated.

I'm here for one more day and then I return back to Seattle. I'm leaving it here for a week or two. I don't know if I will take it back to Seattle if I don't have a secure parking spot. (Considering that they'd basically break into it again. Only, I could pull some fuses and it'd never start, but they would ruin my car in the process anyway!)
