When I was that age my insurance on my Eclipse was just under $300/mo. Admittedly that car cost more than $2,000 but a BMW it was not.

When you're 19, male, and live in the US then car insurance is expensive.
No, you just happened to have a hard on for medicore, yet most stolen car in the US. Try not getting a civic and see what happens to your rate.

What you may not be aware of is that Comprehensive insurance isn't based upon driving experience or age, but purely the value of the car and where you live... It makes sense because comprehensive covers everything besides car accidents (it does cover if you hit an animal though). It's a calculation on the likelihood of your car being damaged by "acts of god" or "bad luck" vs. your driving experience. So yes collision would unaffordable for you but not comprehensive unless you live in a super rough neighborhood.
I don't know about mediocre. It works pretty well for me. And, btw, it doesn't do much to my rate. The rate doesn't go down $50-$60/month with comprehensive. It goes down maybe $10-$20/month at the most, if it does go down.
When I started driving at 16, almost 17, I paid $125/mo for full coverage on a ~$6k vehicle under my parents plan. I've never paid more than that.
Don't forget theft rates also, escalades and civics both pay through the ass for comprehensive, because they get stolen a lot.
Now I have a Shelby, a Range Rover, and a Polaris RZR insured for about that much per month combined. Don't D&D kids.
Who are you using? I'm paying almost $600 per month on insurance with no accidents or tickets in the past 20 years. I'm beginning to feel ripped off.
It was a 2000 Honda Civic EX Coupe, Taffeta White. Bought it for $4000 back in Jan of 2010 at 116k miles. It was stolen at 168k sometime in the last week while parked on the street. I had the minimum insurance required on the car; liability. It will be a total loss and I will get nothing back. Some of you might think, "Should've had comprehensive auto-insurance..." No. I've owned the car for 4 years. When I bought it, my insurance through my parents plan (which I am still on) was $120/month. Comprehensive was $220+/month. 48 months * 100 premium > $4000 I paid. Even then, the check they could give me will be less than what I paid for the car. Regardless of that...
I have a very strong emotional attachment to that car. It is my first and only car. I have not wanted any other car in any significant way to where I would replace it. I have only thought of adding other cars to the mix, never removing mine. I never thought of selling my car and never planned on it. I planned to keep it for the rest of my life even until it could no longer function. (I would never stop trying to fix it)
We were going to grow old together and now it's gone.
