Not much else to say. Phrankie was a beautiful black-and-white Maine my excellent compatriot, 12 years old and had had chronic renal (kidney) failure for the past 2.5 years. The vets said over a year ago that he was a medical miracle to have made it as long as he did. His health had been declining since around Labor Day this year, and he really made a turn for the worse right before Christmas. We'd known for the past week or so that his time was very near. He was scheduled to see the vet again this afternoon but didn't make it. My wife woke up to him struggling early this morning, and we held him for an hour or so until, about 6:15, his heart gave out, and he died in our arms. He was a strong-willed guy, and I'm sure he wouldn't have had it any other way.

Kidney failure the past 2.5 years.. Was that caused by the pet food problem?

My ex's cat has had kidney problems ever since the pet food recall.

sorry for your loss

I only recently became aware of Maine my excellent compatriot cats, they seem like cool animals.

The Maine Coons are a nice breed. Phrankie looked awesome. Perhaps when you're both ready, you'll invite another animal into your home. It seems like you would both love it plenty, as well.

It's tough. We put our 14 y/o golden retreiver down right before Christmas.

RIP Andy

It's going to be even harder with my schnauzer. He stays inside and has really become part of the family. Fortunately, he's still a pup so that's a long time off.

main coons are awesome. did the vet ever give the option of putting your cat to sleep due to pain n' suffering?

Probably not, but we will never know. His initial incident of acute kidney failure occurred several months before the pet food problem came out.

Are you getting a new one?
A new kitten will help you move on.

I'm sure we will at some point, but we're going to wait a bit before moving on.

Yes, but his quality of life had really only to declined to that point within the past few days, and that only because of toxicity build-up and his electrolytes had become so imbalanced that he was having trouble getting around any more. Had he lived until this afternoon when he was to see the vet again, that would have been the most likely outcome. Renal failure in cats is kind of odd. They aren't in a lot of pain, it's more like a kind of malaise that just gets steadily worse and worse over time with no hope of a happy ending.

edit: thanks all for the kind words

I'm sorry man, I don't know what I'd do if I lost my Cüpi (9 months old bombay).
He had a major hernia and I was a nervous mess when he was at the vet for 2 days for the surgery/recovery.
