I don't know whats going on with it. The damn thing keeps ejecting and closing by itself now and then. Its a Phillips CDRW800 series. Sometimes with nocd in it, it'll just eject and close a bunch of times until I manually eject and close. Even with a CD in it, it sometimes happens, which is a pain cuz the autorun function usually loads the program and I have to close the program manually.

Anyone know whats wrong with the drive?

*BUMP*

Anyone what could be wrong?.. As I speak, it is closing and ejecting the CD tray as I speak repeatedly for the last 10 mins. It doesn't seem like its gonna stop.

i had a problem kind of like that, it kept opening and closing, just a few times tho, then it closed, and the burn light stayed on, i turned off the computer and the cd-rw smelt very burnt. it was an acer 1208a tho. maybe something like that is wrong...

or

maybe someone loaded a prank program on your computer to do that, go into task manager and see if anything new is in there.

No,.. only I have access to my computer.. and nothing else is running in Task manager. Flash it?. is that the same as upgrading the firmware? Cuz thats what I just did and its still going crazy as ever. Tried turning my comp off and on and nothing, same ol thing after a few mins. Just started today I guess, I also installed a Geforce 4 Ti4200 today if that has anything to do with it????

You might try going to the manufacturers website and posting a question to the techs. They have usually seen every problem with their products and could possibly have a simple solution, if you haven't already tried that.

If you are still under warrenty, you might consider having the Philips REpossessed.

Sounds defective.

EDIT: If not, asking the mfg's tech support sounds like a good idea. If you want to test it yourself, maybe move it to another IDE channel. Kinda weird that it only started to malfunction right after you got the GF4 installed.

I'm gonna try going to the manufacturer then I guess. Thx though..

ALso, I retried to upgrade the firmware and I get a ASPI send error if that clears anything up.

Yea, I wish they can repossess this.

Some trojan viruses have the ability to open/close cd-roms.
I would get a decent trojan scanner and see if it comes up with anything. If you have even D/L anything from a peer-to-peer network (Kazaa, Grokster etc..) than you can get a trojan.

Ah, i remember the days when virus scanners couldn't find trojans...

netbus anyone? heh... that had the ability to open and close the cd-roms... back oriface was also a well known one as well...

Yea, look into the trojans, and if not that, then try the cd burner on someone else's comp, and see if it has the same behavior.

Check your powersupply. If your powersupply is overloaded your system might do weird things..

Hi thx for the replies. I don't think its a trojan, I have Norton always on that usually detects viruses,.. Downloaded the Moostuff thing anyways and checking it right now........

..................
It found a BDE trojan(Why didn't Norton pick this up). Hopefully that was the problem. For the power supply thing, exactly how would I check that? How would I know if its overloaded and everything and what should I do if it is.

ok.. it wasn't the virus cuz its happening again (just reconnected the power supply to the drive). I forgot to say, my computer doesn't have to be in Windows for this to happen.. I just turn on my computer and it can happen right then, at BIOS and during bootup. Its totally random.

I just have bad luck with CD-ROMS I guess. Happen to me last year with my Plextor. The drive would keep saying busy and nothing was in there and wouldn't work when i put a CD in.

Argh, lets say worst comes to worst and I have to by a new CD-RW,.. what do you guys recommend? Something that last more than a year I hope, cuz thats been like the normal time for a CD drive of mine to become possessed. =)

LOL, maybe I should try the holy water thing, without the hammer.. Actually, it might be a lil scary if it worked =)

I'm having the exact same problem with another Phillips CDRW (a PCRW804 to be specific). When the computer gets warmed up it will do one or more of the following: eject, flash the writing light, make clicking noises, refuse to open, and stop reading. I've replaced my power supply to see if that helped, which it didn't. When I bought it about a year ago, I did flash the firmware, but nothing started happening to it until a month or so ago.

Maybe Phillips drives are just not so good?

Has anyone had bad experiences with Phillips stuff?
