I hate places in general that don't tell you how much something will cost until after they perform the service. Even for off-hours, $200 is an unreasonable amount. If I saw an ad that said $15, and I called, I'd expect them to tell me if it was going to be more than $15. If they said $200, that's fine, I'd choose to just sleep in my car for the night or something and get someone cheaper during regular hours.

if hey advertise $15 then yes you should expect to only pay $15.

If you see a brand new car advertised for $5000 to you just blindly buy it?

If you see a brand new pair of jeans at a discount store for $1.99 to you just blindly buy it?

If you see a home valued at $400k priced at $200k do you just blindly buy it?

....If you see a sketchy looking locksmith link in google ads that advertises generic "work" for $15 do you just blindly buy it?

It's unfortunate that we live in a society that isn't expected to even remotely protect itself. I feel for Nick, and I do think he was scammed, but if you think you're getting any sort of decent service in the middle of the night for $15 then you are going to get scammed. There must be some catch, and it looks like Nick unfortunately found it.

I'm not saying it's "right", but you can't expect to just blindly call some random ad you found on the internet and get quality service.

Yep, I would have just slept in my car and waited for my roommate to come home the next day.

For the record the OP claims to have called several other (Possibly more reputable?) locksmiths.

Also...there was a time constraint on his decision...it's the middle of the night...probably wasn't going to sit around researching locksmithing options..

This.

I called the Sheriff's office and they gave me the numbers to 3 local locksmiths that they recommend, none answered. Well one did, but he was sick and couldn't make it.

I then resorted to googling via phone. I just wanted to sleep in my bed. :awe:

Some states have fixed locksmithing rates. Makes the most sense to me.

you can't compare a house or car to this. i don't get to the point of getting the keys and then they say its not $5k its whatever pay up since you signed the contract.

car dealers do use this tactic. but the car is always sold before you get there. they don't say All honda accords $5k!

IF i see an ad in the paper for pants for $4. yeah i will go and get them. if they have a diffrent price when i get there i complain.

none of these are the same. you really can't compare.

sure pricing mistakes happen. i doubt this is what the locksmith did. he did a price and knows that he has people by the balls.

a advertized price should be honored (sure true price mistakes happen and shouldn't be honored but scamms like this yeah good for the OP!)

From one of the Chicago locksmith's web site:

We provide the services at the nominal fees of $15 service charge per visit of the local locksmith. The total price would be inclusive of this service charge as well as the labor and the purchased materials cost.

So what they are very sneakily saying is that the $15 is a service charge that will be added on to the "real cost". They are not being very fair, but the add does say that the $15 is only part of the total cost.

So now some eastern european transplant has your credit card number AND a grudge against you.

Hope you had your card cancelled and a new one issued while you were filing your dispute.

You may also want to move, since they know your address too.

Know where he lives and can get into his house at any time! lol. Great story though.

I guess I'll have to shoot him if he breaks in.

Hey Nick, get back to us when you shoot and kill these guys for coming after you. You know, like all the other criminals you shot and killed in self defense.

Will do sir. I keep notches in my bedpost for all the criminals I shoot. I can't wait to add a few more.
