Sounds cool....i was going to do it awhile back and build like a mini cpu museum, but found out it was actually quite expensive once you got into the Athlon/Duron and P4 chips....

Yea, i was trying to get my hands on a Tualatin PIII for the collection, but theyre real expensive too. I was thinking on just getting broken ones instead, all my current ones apparently still work, but its not like im ever gonna test them so it wouldnt matter if they didnt work. A nice busted Northwood would be a good addition

I've also got a cardboard box full of random CPU's I run into. ITs a fun hobby actually and it seems to get quite expensive when you get into the first early intel chips as well That white 4004 in the pic cost me over $200 on eBay.

Regardless, you've got an Itanium... I'm jealous.
Now THAT is a collection. Im jealous.

How much L2 does your Pentium II Xeon 400mhz have its is basicly same core as th PII and it is 2x the size.

My Pentium II Xeon has 1MB of L2 cache, twice that of the PII, and its full speed whilest still remaining off die.

Yea it is basically the same as a 400mhz PII deschutes apart from the different slot and cache.

I've also got a pair of PII Xeons w/ 1MB cache each. The reason that the Xeon cartridges are SO frickin huge is that the Cache on a PII Xeon runs at full clock speed. Now this doesn't sound impressive, but back in the day the Cache was NOT on-die, and as such the Xeon needed some serious busses & bandwidth (and clever cache packaging) to talk to the external cache on the PCB at full speed. The standard PII chip also has its cache off die, underneath that nifty plastic nintendo looking cartridge, but it could only talk to its L2 cache at half speed (400MHz P2 = 200MHz L2 Cache)

Edit: I just raided my collection and broke open a PII Xeon and a normal PII so you can see what the difference is inside those crazy cartridges. Kind of interesting.

Karpy is quite the necromancer, raised a 6 year old thread from the dead on his first try!

;-)

As an aside, if you're looking for chips to fill in the gaps, might try www.starmicroinc.net as they have quite a few of the older chips pretty cheap.

Look at all those key chains :whiste:

I have at least three P4's sittin around and 2 or three Athlon XP's. Only remember purchasing one Athlon XP in my time, where the rest came from I couldn't imagine. Heck I actually have a Intel Atom CPU sittin around. A buddy decided he liked his Net Book so much he smashed it against a rock repeatedly

I am very jealous of the xeons and Pentium Pros

I've depleted my collection by quite a bit, but I still have about 5 Pentiums, 20ish PIIs, not sure how many P3s...at least 10, then a few P4s..

I'd really love to find a quad slot 1 board to throw in some of my P2s.

right now I'm using a P2l97-DS with 2 400mhz PIIs

Oh boy and I thought I was a nerd!
Great collection guys but you gotta ask yourself, WHY?
Please don't be offended. Each to their own.
If I still had any of these I would gladly give them to you guys.
Who knows maybe one day they might be worth a lot of money to a museum???
Mac.

Each CPU tells a different story, and it's fun to remember those experiences/times. Some are pretty collectable, if rare, but sounds like fun to me. People collect all sorts of things.

I have a bunch of various cpu's if you want more. I have old Pentiums, K6-2's, AMD DX4 120mhz, ect... I have older socket a's as well. If you want old ram I have that as well.

I actually just got rid of about 30x P2's to someone who wanted to mess around. Just shoot me a pm if you want some more to add to your collection.
