My college reads every word passed over the network!

Today in my Lab for Data Structures we were greeted by an Admin. He storms in the room, walks up to a kid and says are you J(so-and-so), the kid was like ya... he said: did you just type whore over the network?"

We we like WTF? He typed it via AOL IM, and the Admin actually came downstairs to confront a student for typing something in a Private Message to a friend upstairs. I know he didn't just see it on the screen upstairs and come down... he actually traced it back the machine he was sitting at. :|

Why are they wasting their time and resources tracking every work us students send over the network! That's just lame.

Then don't use it. Your use of the network means you agree to abide by their rules, namely consent to monitoring. If you don't like it, then go dialup.

If it is yours, that's one thing, but it is the school's connection, right?

I'm glad my school doesn't do that. One day we had time left before the bell rang in computer class so I went to anandtech but I made that typo(its a pr0n site). It let it though and I exited out real quick.

I can see that... but WTF? Come down, and signal a kid out, and then blatinly (sp.) say the word outloud which is far more offensive than typing it? Esspicialy seeing that no one even knew he had said anything.

Yah, I remember back in high school I used to be the lab aide to the technology person at our school. One day he called down to the office and requested that a student come to the lab. The student arrived and was promptly chewed out because he gave out his phone number to someone on a porno chat line. I personally knew he had the capability to spy on any computer in the school using a program similar to pc anywhere, but not this.

It was rather shocking to know that they have the capability to filter certain words and be alerted when they are in use.

Schools especially are rather sensitive when it comes to in appropriate content being passed over their networks. Some schools care, some schools don't.

I tried it. I typed every word I could think of to a buddy upstairs and I didn't get crap. I was hoping he was going to come back down .

I think they have Psych students monitoring your posts for extra credit or something.

The weird thing is our Mod's are like fresh out of BOCES.

I didn't think they had the brainpower to set something up like that. (no offense to BOCES people... but this is a 500+ computer main frame, that's alot of software to monitor).

At the school where I work we have the capability to monitor anything a student does, but our computing use policy is deliberately lax to allow for lots of stuff. If we catch you sucking up huge amounts of bandwidth or serving out a pay pron site we'll shut you down, otherwise we're pretty open... we do block quite a bit of stuff (mostly filesharing apps like Napster) but only for bandwidth reasons...

that makes me worry.

but the reason schools are sometimes tight, is because if the kid who gave his phone number out, if his parents found out, or some really prissy mother of another student found that the schools pc's where so lax as to allow such access, they'd (the school admins) would get hung. there are so many super overly protective mothers/parents out there that would love to have fried school administrator for dinner.
