MY COMPUTER CAUGHT FIRE!!!

My dad's Athlon XP 1800+ setup w/ EP-8KHA+ caught fire when my foot accidentally knocked the power button when I was installing a water cooler on the CPU to overclock it. Thankfully, I had a pitcher of water for the water cooler by my side. So I quickly poured the water onto the motherboard and CPU. They are both ruined and I am trying to get a refund.

Now I need a replacement computer, all of the accessories and peripherals are still in good shape, it is just the motherboard and CPU that are ruined. I am never going to use an AMD setup again because of its high flammability. This is really not funny after what has happened to me. I decided to turn to Intel, but I require some help in selecting a motherboard for the Northwood.

Which is the best chipset for a DDR solution? I am leaning towards the 845-D because of its high compatibility and stability. I prefer ATA133 as well as integrated RAID for my extra HDD. I also want USB 2.0 integrated for an upgrade path. I have compiled a list of possible motherboard manufacturers: MSI, ASUS, SOYO, ABIT, EPOX, and GIGABYTE. I want the one that offers the least amount of problems. Which is the best overclocker? It is surprising that I have not learned that overclocking can do harm to your computer.

Thanks for your opinions.

I believe AMD and INTEL have equal flamability points

CPU manufacturer should NOT matter

Good luck

I believe that you'll be a freaking retard if you're going to claim for something that you burnt.

<<They are both ruined and I am trying to get a refund.>>

Well, thanks to people like you, I have a hell of a time getting a refund for stuff when it arrives defective or breaks down. I used to blame stores, now I'll just blame you. :|

Guys, next time a store treats you like a criminal when you try to get a refund on a truely defective product, send this guy a thank you note.

It would be pretty classic seeing the look on the RMA guy's face when he open up the package and sees a smoldering, black mobo and CPU though...you have to admit.

Refund? And as a result of this fire that you started you're going to buy intel?

I wonder if a mod can change your login to DocFarts....

DocSmarts' post holds no water.

(1) Why would you have an open pitcher of water for the water cooler? You would want to use de-ionized and purified water...

(2) If this was an electrical fire, you would not want to pour water on it.

I think it is clear that 'DocSmarts' knows nothing about water cooling or overclocking an Athlon. He has no credibility with me (not that he had any in the first place).

If you want a DDR Solution, buy an Asus P4B266 and a Retail 1.6 GHz Northwood. I think xbitlabs has a good review of the Asus board. If you aren't into overclocking, buy an Intel OEM board. I don't think any board is easier to use.

no kidding. a PLUGGED in computer with WATER nearby, and like you said, tap water which is a no no for water cooling, and then he bumps the power switch and it magically sets on fire. duh. if youre gonna have a naked processor, UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER. and then pouring water on it. wow. and then trying to get a refund. wow again.

and then blaming amd. i guess the p4's thermal protection was meant for geniuses like you !!

To address your concerns:

1. The water was used for the water cooler as stated above. There is a water tank to pour the DE-IONIZED water.

2. Since it was an electrical fire I turned off the power and then poured the de-ionized water.

Thanks for your advice.
