Just like to make a little note here...
Im willing to bet that probably 75-85% of these members, along with my pals over at the HardOcp Forums run athlon/XP systems. With this in mind, Id like to point out that none of us have managed to ignite them in any way. And yes, captain tardo, you unplug the case and if youre worried about static, get a wrist-strap, they work.

100% bullshit. Try 75+%. Practically everybody that uses these forums are OCers. Think about it for a sec, how the hell can it ONLY be 1% if 95% of the people here are OCers, and 60% use AMD. That 60% is probably 80% of AMD's total revenue.

Whatever hardware you end up getting . . . please, just do me one little favor:
First for leaving the rear main switch "on" while working on a computer, second for attempting something way beyond your capability and third for expecting someone else to pay for the damage.
If you ever get a flat on the road, PLEASE call AAA since you have a tendency to not follow a safe procedure.
Do not attempt to change the tire yourself, because I can see something bad happening.
You have a front wheel drive AT car and you get a flat on a front tire and I can see:
you'll throw it in park, then lift up the front end. Car starts rolling since rear wheels aren't locked through transmission and you skipped applying parking brake. You shout WTF? as you gasp for air underneath your own car.
This thread may also hold a record for "Causing the most number of people to join Anandtech." I'm seeing a lot of junior members with really low post counts here.

1. ATX MBs are powered even when the power switch is off.
2. I am very careful and will unplug the PC, give the capacitors time to bleed off before even pulling/installing components. Not to mention keeping water away from electronic components.
3. Blaming AMD is ludicrous. You just don't want to take responsibility for your own actions.
4. If I had done something like that, I don't think I would have posted it here.
5. This is going in my "you ain't going to believe what this guy did..." link list.
(1) Why would you have an open pitcher of water for the water cooler? You would want to use de-ionized and purified water...
(2) If this was an electrical fire, you would not want to pour water on it.
I think it is clear that 'DocSmarts' knows nothing about water cooling or overclocking an Athlon. He has no credibility with me (not that he had any in the first place).
If you want a DDR Solution, buy an Asus P4B266 and a Retail 1.6 GHz Northwood. I think xbitlabs has a good review of the Asus board. If you aren't into overclocking, buy an Intel OEM board. I don't think any board is easier to use. >>

BTW, DocSmarts, you do not happen to be a member of Swedish Special Forces that was killed in Afghanistan, but continued to log on to AnandTech afterwards, all the while making secret weapons for the Army Rangers, creating Gawd-like motherboards by using an arc-welder to hook two regular mobo's together, as well as being a world class Marksman, do you?
Your BS is about as plausible as that other guy's was.
So let?s sum up......
1.) Any A+ course they would have taught you to unplug the machine and use a wrist band to ground you?re self. Your self.... the PC will be fine if the person working on it is grounded because a pc that is turned off and is not plugged in has no electrical current going into it and can not create friction that might cause a spark........
2.) You can blame AMD or the Motherboard manufacturer all you want but you turned on the system with out a heat sink/fan on the CPU which both AMD and the MoBo manufacturer explicitly say not to do.
3.) The CPU might have smoked but there were no flames that needed to be extinguished by dumping water on them.
4.) A good amount of AMD users overclock but AMD sells to oems and system builders you build systems for other people and they aren't overclocked. Compaq, hp are the bigger ones but lots of mom and pop builders sell amd cause its cheaper and the performance is on par with Intel (do not get into a benchmark war with me...I said on par )
5.) You might want to reread your "rigs" as there are numerous mistakes in them.
6.) If you want people to "stay on topic" make the dam title the topic the title now is ?my computer caught fire"
7.) Who cares if the water is conductive or not. Its water....would you submerge you pc in a vat of non conductive water and expect nothing to happen??? No. and if you say yes you would only be talking about laboratory conditions and if you did submerge it you wouldn't leave it plugged in.
8.) Most motherboards that I have seen as of late include a USB 2.0 pci card because it?s not what everybody wants...... I would look at reviews at hardocp.com, anandtech.com, sharkyextreme.com, etc......
9) I would also stay away from a ?upgrade path" unless you plan to upgrade in the next 6 to 8 months. I say that because you may find a board with everything you want on it and then in a year when you want to upgrade the cup you may find that the MoBo doesn't support the newest fastest thing.
Well it seems like everyone on the forums has responded to Captain Tardo (Lovely naming of Doc"LackOf"Smarts), so I might as well add my few cents on to the bonfire of flames. Firstly, why even bother posting something like that? I mean honestly, did you expect positive feedback from that? Of course not, you came here to incite people into some feverish rage at your moronic ramblings. Secondly, you could have come up with a more convincing story, then MY COMPUTER CAUGHT FIRE!! cause it was an AMD. Thats kinda silly............ oh my god! My computer set on fire while I was writing this post! AHHHHHHHH!.............
If you are going Intel you might want to consider a Rambus based system.
Okay the take home lessons from your experience is:
1. Do not run your system without a heatsink\fan properly installed and functional?
2. Unplug your system when you are working on it?
3. Use Intel because of its thermal protection?
4. If you want help or recommendations on which motherboard to buy do not give the thread a flame bait title or introduction like
"My computer caught fire!!!".
<< Ummm, if you unplug the frikken computer you don't really need to worry about the computer being grounded. You just need to worry that you aren't carrying and electrical charge. Why would you work on a plugged in computer?????? >>
I will vouch for the fact that there are A+ books that state to have the machine plugged in, as to provide a ground path so that the chassis is properly grounded. This may be a valid point for AT systems, but definately not for ATX.
Also, because I am A+ certified, I can attest to how worthless the certification really is
