my computer does not like routers

I put together a new computer last week and now I can only seem to connect to the internet when I am directly connected to the modem with no router in-between. I have tried both of my routers, a Belkin and a SMC. The MOBO is a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI, it has a single gigabit ethernet connection. I also tried adding a PCI Ethernet card and made sure all drivers and updates were installed but neither card will connect with a router there. I know the pci card works b/c I had it in another box. When I use a router is says low or no connectivity and I usually get an apipa address or even if it does get an ip from the router I still can?t really connect. Would it be something with the mobo? I can connect to the internet fine directly connected to the modem. I also tried configuring a static ip address, no dice. i am connecting through a cable modem.

you need to reboot the cable modem at a minimum, so the ISP's DHCP server can give your router a new address.
If that does not work, clone the MAC address of your computer to the router.

You are connecting via ethernet cable and not wireless, right?

Also, can you confirm that the cable is an inter-connect cable and not a cross-connect cable?

Do the lights on your ethernet adapter and router and/or switch light up when you plug it in?

Is your ethernet adapter disabled?

So the PC isn't getting an IP from the router or is it?

I'd do a hard rest on the router to set it back to factory defaults.

Then unplug the cable modem and router and hook everything up.

Cable Modem -> WAN port in router -> PC's network card.

Then power up the cable modem and wait a minute. Power up the router and wait a minute. Power up the PC and wait a minute.

Does the PC get an IP from the router or does it get a 169 address? If it gets one, can you access the router's config pages? If so, you should be able to get online as long as the router is set to get it's DHCP from the cable modem (which it should be after a hard reset). Shouldn't be any need to do MAC cloning.

If nothing else, post a screenshot of your Ipconfig screen, the router's config pages, etc... Might shed some light.

How about hooking up a different PC to the router to make sure the router is working properly...

i am going to try again tonight after work as you suggest (kelemvor) because it is not making any sense to me. it times out when i put in the ip for the router so i can't change the settings in the router control panel. i hit the reset button on it last night and had it unplugged for a few hours. definitely running out of ideas here. the worst part is that i know it is still working because my house mate is able to use it and he is using a mac.

Have your house mate try accessing the router. Make sure you are using the correct IP address. What ISP are you using? I know with many it is no longer necessary to clone the mac address, you just do a cold reboot on the modem and then on the router and you are good to go.

WITH THe router connected do this for me

ipconfig /all

Tell me what the DNS Server is
Tell me what the gateway is
and tell me what your ip address

If it's not working, your going to have to unplug everything to get back here on good ol internetz to give me this information and we can go from there.

Methinks the ghost of Elvis is plaguing your network. Shake the demons by asking for handle reassignment -- afterwards, write this one down 500 times on pale blue parchment and place on a kerosene soaked wooden cross. Curse in triplicate the day you decided to take the Elvis name in vane and burn until remnants blow away to find their suitable home with The King. That should cure your woes and set the spiritual evils that demonize your network free!

On a less serious note, have you tried using this router anywhere else with another PC?

You mentioned you hit the reset button but that doesn't usually clear the settings completely. Check the manual or online for how to do a hard reset. Usually involves plugging it in while holding the button then releasing it after so many seconds or whatever.

Also have you tried reinstalling the network card? GO to Device Manager, delete the card completely, reboot and let Windows redetect it. Go make sure there aren't new drivers too. Could also try a different slot in the PC if you have more that are open.

i have still not gotten it connected. i have uninstalled the network adapters in computer management but did not know there was a different way of resetting the router. i left it off for a while; unplugged for an hour or so and reset it with the button and thought that would be enough. i will probably call belkin.

There's basically a Soft Reset (which is like rebooting) and a Hard Reset (which is like reseting everything to how it was from the factory). You'd want the Hard Reset version. Check the manual or do a quick online search for instructions.
