My CPU seems too hot !!!

I recently assembled the configuration that you can see in my signature. I am happy with the performance that I have now. FYI, I could measure about 8900 3DMarks. However when the PC is idle (just surfing), I see follwing values:

Vcore 1,30V
CPU Temperature 55 C
MB Temperature 34 C

in spite of my Scythe Ninja... No overclocking !!! (yet)
This temperature is reported by ASUS PC Probe 2, Intel TAT, SpeedFan...

I started loading with Intel TAT and after few seconds, temperature jumped at more than 80 C when I aborted the test (after max 1 minute, load only 65%...)

To me, the CPU temperature looks too high! I suspect that the Scythe Ninja is not properly seated or similar.

Can anyone advise me on this ? Should I try to re-install the HSF again
Does anyone have a good link with images and explanations of the process ??

Thank you in advance for your help. Have a great day.

I have a scythe cooler.
First download and install Speedfan and double check your temps. You know the scenes in movies when the engineer looks at a high temperature on a guage and taps it a couple of times to make sure it is not stuck? You need to make sure the readings are correct first.
If still high, I would suspect that the thermal compound may have been put on too thick or that in the process of installation , the thermal compound may have gotten an air bubble. You just need a translucent layer of thermal compound.
The scythe is so big, it is easy to have problems making sure the seating of the base is correct.

I already use them all: PC Probe2, TAT, SpeedFan etc... they all show me the same temperature values, +/- 1-2 C. They cannot all be wrong....

Therefore, I suspect that the compound layer is too thick or aome other similar issue. I will have to take the MB out of the case and re-install the Scythe. I cannot install it while in the Antec case, there is simply no position to press one of the plastic pins.

By the way, what is the average idle CPU temperature ? I know it depends on the room temperature, etc. I mean normal room temperature, 20-25 C.

I just put together a Conroe 6300 using the factory HSF and using the pre-applied thermal compound (I just wanted to do a standard build). Temps per Speed fan are 33C for the CPU and 44C for the Gigabyte northbridge at idle. When I run the AMD 3800 x2 compputer, the temps with Ninja are around 35-38C at idle for the CPU. Jumps to the low 40's when I start using the CPU.
A thought, are you reading the MB temps when you look at the high reading or the CPU? Double check. Put a little stress on the CPU, and it will be the one to rise quickly.

My e6600 idled at about 50 with stock fan (although its slightly higher since the P25 bios).

On a side note, I'm running 7900s in SLI, your 3dmark score is about 3000 higher than mine. Guess I need to learn how to tweak mine :/

I did a load test with Intel TAT, 2 minutes 60% load for CPU1, then 2 minutes same load for CPU2, then both CPUs with the same load.

MB temperature was always 34 C
CPU temperature was reported 70 C during 1 CPU load only and jumped at 82 C with load on both CPUs. Quite a lot I would say....

Then, CPU temperature dropped at 57 C and remained so at idle.

Vcore stayed at 1,30 V all the time.

Lupi,

please be aware that by updating the Nvidia drivers to the ones approved by Futuremark, I got an increase of 3DMARKS from 8825 to 8935.

I think that's your best first try. Thermal compound is intended to fill any small pits and gaps between the die and the heatsink. Anything more than the thinnest possible coating can actually impede thermal transfer from the chip to the heatsink.

Harvey,

you must be absolutely right.....

Now my PC simply shuts down after just a few minutes... there is definitely something wrong with my HSF.

I already ordered AS5 and the cleaninig kit and I will re-seat the HSF during the weekend.

Thank you all for your replies. You've helped me a lot.

To be honest, this sounds like your heat sink isn't pushed all the way down.
I have dell with a C2D in my office. They shipped the damn thing without EVER installing the heatsink. yeah... they just left it hanging on top of the cpu. I saw temperatures of 82C in that case. I'm suspecting you have the same issue.

If your heat sink is a push pin thing, make sure you install that BEFORE putting the mobo in the case. You want to push the pins ALL the way down so that you hear click on all 4 pins (if your board is inside the case, this is hard to do, as you maybe bending your board).

If your heat sink is screwed on, make sure you screw it all the way on...

You were right, the HSF had 3 of the 4 pins loosem, there was no contact to the CPU at all. I cleaned HSF and CPU with Acticlean 1 and 2, then used AS5, re-seated the Ninja and and now I have CPU at idle 31 C and MoBo, 32 C...

But definitely, installing the Scythe Ninja was NOT the easiest thing to do, even outside the case. Those pins are a pain...

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP !!! I can star OC now....
