Chase contacted me saying there were possible fraudulent charges on my card. They were all online charges. One was for a song on iTunes, something else for $2, and another charge for $60. It seems like they started with the smaller charges first to check if it worked and then went for the bigger one. The weird thing is they got the card number somehow without the physical card. I haven't bought anything online with this card in months and I've used it in a store probably less than two times in the last two months. Chase is issuing me a new card number and is alerting the three credit reporting agencies.

Questions:
1) How could a thief
a) buy something online without knowing my billing address and
b) use his house address to ship to without giving himself away?
2) Is there anything else I should do?

By going through your mail or by you using wireless networks that you do not control.

most likely it was some store or even the bank itself that had a data breach

Damn that sucks. Make sure you contact the credit agencies after this whole mess, your score will drop ~20 - 50 points because you are a risk now.

It takes something so little to bring the score down, and it takes years to bring it back up -- so get a head start on it now.

Dear lord I hope you're kidding.

The best way to handle a lost card is to "deactivate it" and get issued a new card. Unfortunately, this only happens in cases where you report the theft BEFORE the stolen card is used.

When a card is used, the account will show up as "closed" which can drop your score significantly. Chase is doing the right thing by reporting the fraud to the credit companies, which *might* help prevent the score drop -- BUT, the OP should also contact the companies to make sure that his credit score is maintained.

EDIT: I am not trolling, when my card was stolen years ago, it was reported as a "closed account" and my score dropped a few points. I might be able to back it up if Discover has my credit reports still available to me.

OP just needs to follow up on this.

You've been compromised.

Get yourself a new name, SSN, driver's license, and new cards.....then contact all your friends over the past fifteen years of the name change.

The process takes several months but you should be good to go!
