My dad drinks and drives and he wants to take my car for the week. What to do?

I'm leaving for a trip tonight and I'll be coming back on Sunday. My dad has never had a DUI, but he constantly comes home drunk. Driving, of course. So, he wants to take my car while I'm out of town. The problem is that it's his on paper, by it's my car.

Is it unreasonable for me to not give him the keys? I just really don't want anyone with a drunk driving history to drive my car... But, he did pay for it. Blah.

He paid for it? Cough up the keys.

I don't support drinking and driving, but I just wouldn't feel right refusing use of my car to the person who paid for it. Maybe he won't drink and drive this time. Maybe you should mention it to him before you hand over the keys.

doesn't "his on paper" + "he did pay for it" just mean "his"? Does he not have a car of his own? Are you worried he wouldnt fix it if he hit a car, curbed a wheel etc?

Give him the car. You're lucky he lets YOU drive it.

His on paper = His car
He paid cash for it = His car

He is nice enough to let you drive it, and now you "think" it is yours.

Why can't he drive his own vehicle?

What's wrong with saying "No, I won't let you drive mine, since you drive drunk"?

your dad sounds like a real winner. make sure to keep sweet tea with you whenever he comes home drunk.

as previously mentioned, it's his car.

but i wouldn't let a family member go drinking and driving even if it they did bring their own car. if you can get a designated driver for him if you can't do it yourself.

Tell him you can't get 3rd party liability insurance, so nobody else is allowed to drive your car. Or just tell him no.

To those telling him to give up the keys, would you change your post if his dad were to go out and kill someone in a drunk driving accident?

Take the keys with you, all of them ("your" car, his car, doesn't matter). A drunk has no business behind the wheel.
