My dad found out I'm agnostic

Here's a little background. I'm currently 15 and I grew up Catholic. I faithfully attended mass every Sunday (and sometimes Saturday) since I was young. Around the age of 13 is when I started actually thinking about my faith. I reasoned that there is no way of knowing whether there is a God or not. I became agnostic, however I didn't tell my dad and I continued to participate in mass.

So anyway, a while back I had bookmarked this site. Then this afternoon my dad, unbeknown to me, got on my computer to use the internet and "stumbled" (snooped) upon the bookmark. He confronted me about it and said that he does not want websites like this to corrupt me. I told him that the website had nothing to do with it, that I had decided on my own that I was agnostic quite a while ago. I told him I had avoided telling him in fear of his reaction, but he wouldn't have any of it.

Now I don't know how I can mend my relationship with my dad.

A man has to choose his own path. If your father will not sit down and rationally discuss your feelings and thoughts on this matter, just refuse to discuss it any further. To do so will only deepen the divide.

Thankfully my father encouraged us to read everything and think for ourselves.

it sounds like the OP is already being reasonable about his lack of belief and tried to hide it. so what more can he do? pretend to believe? how do you "play by their rules" regarding personal belief? did you even think before posting?

Sorry, living in someone's house doesn't mean you have an obligation to agree with them on religious grounds. Almost every time someone brings up this "their house, their rules" BS it's completely asinine. There are some cases where it's valid, but most of the time I see it on these forums it's completely irrelevant to the discussion.

Actually the wisest thing the OP's dad could do would be open to discussing it with him and letting him deal with his faith in his own way. Trying to force it upon him will only have the opposite effect.

He could pretend to be a good little Catholic, but that would neither be true to himself nor to his family, and nor to God (if there is a God). Is that what you're suggesting, doze? That he deliberately lie to and decieve his parents?

Besides, no "rules" were broken. He just has to work out his relationship with his dad, who will either accept him for what he believes, or not.

Reminds me of someone my dad spoke to where he works - she said she's a Republican because she was born that way. She apparently believed that party affiliation is simply handed down from parents, and can not be changed.
Religious and political affiliations are choices to be made by the individual.

You should be proud that you have the ability to question your beliefs rather than blindly accept whatever is spoon-fed to you. Better than being a hypocrite, like so many "religious" people have turned out to be. I think the first response is as good as you're going to get in this thread (with doze's response being the worst).
