The irony (and/or hypocrisy) is that choice and free will are at the heart of Christianity.

You have plenty of time to be an emo agnostic vegetarian (+ whatever else is currently trendy) when you grow up and move out.

Since when is wanting a good relationship with ones father emo?

To everyone else, thanks for the support. I was planning on sticking to my guns, but its tough because I've always been really close with him.

If your father is a religious person, the type who would be angered by his child turning agnostic, he should definitely be open to discussing all the things that drove you away from your faith. Any religious person (Catholics, Muslim etc.) loves to be handed an opportunity to clear any doubts/misconceptions and lead others back to the path (or at least try).

Try rationalizing with him. Your ideas, his ideas - where you agree and where you don't. If anything, this should be a good chance to actually talk about things. Tell him things are changing in this age. People want answers and won't just believe in things blindly. He may learn to accept your decision...or even convince you to return to the faith. Who knows?

I think it would be best to have a serious discussion with your father about why you feel and believe the way you do. He can also say why he believes the way he does. Neither of you should be out to change the beliefs of the other, only to educate the other as to why you have chosen your current belief set.

Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

The problem with translations is that how the quote is interpreted is up to the point of view of the reader. For example, I could read that and take it to mean that it's perfectly ok for men to tell lies to women, but not to men. I could also interpret that to mean that women are not a subset of mankind.

Or does "lie" in this context mean "to lay down with"? Or, perhaps, "to have sex with"? In your opinion, it has a certain specific meaning, but how do you know that your opinion is correct? Did someone tell you?

for all of you who got a kick out of the website in my op, here's one of my favorite quotes from the bible I found..

He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD.

Around the age of 13 is when I started actually thinking about my faith. I reasoned that there is no way of knowing whether there is a God or not. I became agnostic, however I didn't tell my dad and I continued to participate in mass.

So anyway, a while back I had bookmarked this site. Then this afternoon my dad, unbeknown to me, got on my computer to use the internet and "stumbled" (snooped) upon the bookmark. He confronted me about it and said that he does not want websites like this to corrupt me. I told him that the website had nothing to do with it, that I had decided on my own that I was agnostic quite a while ago. I told him I had avoided telling him in fear of his reaction, but he wouldn't have any of it.

Now I don't know how I can mend my relationship with my dad.

If your relationship is irrevocably shattered because you have a brain and are capable of thinking for yourself you're better off without it that relationship.

A sure sign that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all worship the same deity - it has a hat fetish.

I read it as only applying to bicurious men as a homosexual man would not lieth with a woman.

Tell your Dad that we were genetically engineered by the Elohim and have him visit this site.

I wouldn't use the term shattered. More like dented.

Easiest way to do things,
Step 1. Never talk about religion with your father again, it will only lead to trouble.
Step 2. Still go to church, go through the motions, again avoiding conflict is the key.
Step 3. Get a job that makes you work when you would normally go to church. You now have an excuse not to be there and are making money at the same time.
Step 4. Keep this up until you move out, and never forget step 1.

Keep in mind once you leave the Church you can't come back. So I can understand why this would bother him. He just wants what is best for you.

very good point. I'm glad he cares enough to make an issue about it. however our relationship is now strained to the point where its weird sitting in the same room as him and he's not being very accepting.

Or go to the other extreme and consider Opus Dei, and start flogging yourself and wear that barbed wire thing on your leg.

What kind of crap is that - you leave and can't come back? All the more reason why you should leave now.
