ya just present him w/ that. my parents never forced a belief system onto me. they allowed me to choose whichever i wanted, and it amounted to very interesting conversation with my Dad about science, philosophy, and religion.

Although I was raised Protestant Prysbeterian, I turned out to be Agnostic, but of course, I sometimes still go to church since it is deeply ingrained within our western culture. It's more of a cultural thing for me now.

Just sad....I pray you find your faith once again.

The true message of the bible is that god asks for us to have faith in his exsistance and to lead a life that is good.

I am a christen however I do not support big religion and I believe that most of those who lead big religion use God as a path to what they want. You can question God and that is why we have free will to do as we want. I look at how religion has been used in the past and it makes me crazy. However I do believe there is a God and I try and be tolerant of others. I am far more tolerant of those who choose to not believe than those who choose to believe because I feel the no believers do not have a play book to go by. Howevr professed believers who want to take pieces out of the bible and then use them for an agenda is one of the worst sins you can commit in my eyes.

If you believe there is a god but are havin doubts aboiut the religion then you should look at the religion and not the faith as they are two seperate things.

The way I look at it is that there are way too many different interpretations of the bible to believe everything written in there as absolute truth. Like how the Bible suggests the Earth is only 6000 years old. I can understand how that would lead to some people losing faith.

On the other hand there are way too many things that can?t be explained by science. Like how the first life forms came about. It is believed that it was just a chemical reaction. How did those first life forms get the instinct to reproduce? Or how about what it takes as far as a grouping of cells to create a soul? There is just way too many unexplained things in out universe to think that there isn?t a higher power at work here. Just my opinion.

My son after many years of going to church decided he didn't believe in Jesus anymore...your dad probably knows that its not something you can't really teach someone...either they believe it inside themselves or they don't....I wouldn't be too quick to judge what your dad may or may not be thinking about the subject. I'm sure he wants what is best for you..and probably thinks that leading you on a path of believing in certain teachings that produce good morals is a decent way to be a parent.

I pray you find reason and sensibility, or does only god answer prayers that support his bottom line?

GD liberals; he's owned by his father until he is 18. His only recourse is to repeatedly publically humiliate himself and his parents if they force him to go to church.

It could be a tough thing for some people to deal with. Hell...my Mom's a Methodist minister and she pretty much accepts that I don't believe in God--at least not in the way that she does. We don't discuss it really, because we both respect each other's beliefs.

Eventually, your pops will get over it and move on. Just be patient with it.

I also agree with the earlier suggestion of just telling him that you're gay. That'll get his mind off of the agnosticism.

You sound as if you're not much older than 15 yourself..

BTW, my dad has accepted (to some extent) that these are my beliefs but I'm wondering if he's going to force me to go to church this Sunday. I guess we'll find out.

Here's a little background. I'm currently 15 and I grew up Catholic. I faithfully attended mass every Sunday (and sometimes Saturday) since I was young. Around the age of 13 is when I started actually thinking about my faith. I reasoned that there is no way of knowing whether there is a God or not. I became agnostic, however I didn't tell my dad and I continued to participate in mass.

So anyway, a while back I had bookmarked this site. Then this afternoon my dad, unbeknown to me, got on my computer to use the internet and "stumbled" (snooped) upon the bookmark. He confronted me about it and said that he does not want websites like this to corrupt me. I told him that the website had nothing to do with it, that I had decided on my own that I was agnostic quite a while ago. I told him I had avoided telling him in fear of his reaction, but he wouldn't have any of it.

Now I don't know how I can mend my relationship with my dad.

if your dad really cares about you, he should respect your beliefs. tell him that.

this forum is harsh sometimes.

anyway i'm kind of in the same boat, except I'm 5 years older than you, and I can relate. my parents won't accept any other beliefs (or disbeliefs) and labels anyone who believes in something else as "bad people". it's ridiculous. I still go to meetings with them when I visit them (because I'm a doll controlled by tyrannical parents), but I don't listen.

it doesn't really matter if you go or not, what really matters is your belief. you can always go but not listen (or listen and just laugh about it). just go to please your parents, perhaps? because although you're not being true to yourself and your parents (and this entity called god), it will still make others happy, and that's really all that matters. the whole purpose of religion, in my opinion, is to make people happy, whether or not it is fact or bs.

and always keep an open mind about what people believe... who knows, one day when you get married and face hardships, you just might turn to a great being yourself.

Kudos to you for turning a critical eye to your faith and coming to your own decision.

The fact that your father can't handle it says more about him than it does about. It's not your place to have to "fix" anything. It's his place to realize that he can't force his faith upon you. Good luck.

All kids go through this phase in their youth. Then when they grow up they realize their parents were right. They're just "confused".

1) People of faith are more happy, more successful, raise better kids, are kinder and are generally better members of society.

You can't argue with that.

It's a religious thing, and religious people are whackos completely incapable of any rational thought. Give up now, save yourself grief. Do what you have to do to survive till you can get away from your dad and chalk it up to a lesson in religious fanaticism.

I don't mean to be harsh, but there is NO reason with a religious person. At all. Ever. Because you're a minor you have no rights, and have to live in the same house. Just find a way to survive for now, and someday you'll be out on your own and can be a thinking human being. If your dad doesn't like it it's entirely his problem.

Buy the books "God is Not Great" and "The God Delusion", read them and I think you will like them. Also place these books for all to see in the house. Make sure your dad sees you reading these books. If he confronts you, then it means he doens't respect you.
