He's like a Sargeant at my gym. I've seen him before with other people.

He basically guarantees if I come the three days a week I schedule with him for half hour each day, I will lose 8 pounds per month, and eventually get down to my target rate of "below 200". I WAS at 260 back in January, if you all remember, and now I'm 220. So I lost 40 pounds on my own....

But without something life changing like being forced to work out, I'll never get over my ex... go figure.

Anyway, so what do you all think? Good move?!

I think personal trainers for the most part a sham. You are paying this fool to motivate you and that is all. If you can't do that yourself then perhaps maybe you need the help

Excellent move, as long as you stay with it. I love going to the gym and lifting weights. A word of warning though: don't be surprised when, after your weight drops for a while, it starts to go back up. This isn't a bad thing, though - it just means that you're putting on more muscle (assuming you're working out consistently, of course).

I know nothing of what I am doing with weights, nor do I know how to eat. They do all of that. Plus, you're right, during that last 10 weight lifts, it would be really good to have someone yelling so I finish them.

It's always good to get in shape. If you don't mind paying for a personal trainer, I don't see a problem. I remember having a similar mentality when I first broke up with my gf. After some months I got into another relationship and gained 30lbs. Don't let that happen to you!

Not everyone knows alot about weight lifting and what routines they should start out with and progress with.

If you really get the results you want it's well worth it.

Just stick with it and don't give up!

Well, she made me lose 40 pounds already now its just HARD to lose the rest with just cardio.

But yeah, I wouldn't have lost a pound without her hurting me like she did. Go figure again.

not at all- I'm thinking of getting one to show me more excersizes, spotting me on heavy lifting and someone to continually give me new ideas and feedback.

I feel like you can find all the information and the motivation that you need on the internet. If you've already lost 40lbs on your own, does that not motivate you? I remember when I lost even 5 pounds, I couldn't wait to go back to the gym the next day.

Well actually I kind of have to cut back. I already work out like five times a week running. He says I will have to cut back on the cardio a bit and do more weight training....

so GOING to the gym isn't a problem

Plain and simple:

Its just good to have someone there to guide you. Then there's no excuses, you keep at it. Plus, I have health problems, so I can't ****** around. Or I used to, they are gone now, but I can't let them come back. So this is critical, its not just to "lose weight for the heck of it".

WELL worth the money since I know I won't ever have one of those "Eh I'll go tomorrow" days again, with me paying for it.

hmmmm i am now considering getting a PT...i know ****** for how to workout and what to do...i just run and swim...though all i care about is loosing weight...i dont require any more muscle but if it starts to tone up that would be cool. i think it would be worth it, for me at least, because i would actually be able to commit to a time frame...as of now i just go whenever i feel like it, which isnt often enough :/

Why don't you just keep doing what you have been doing? If you have already lost 40lbs on your own, wasn't it working? Are you just unsure of your methods? A little research on the net would solve that insecurity. I'd recommend checking out the forums on johnstonefitness.com

I think all you are really paying for is someone to motivate you. If you really need that then great. All of the information needed to lose fat/build muscle can be found for free on the net though. My personal favorite: link

A LOT of people need the help...though if you're lucky enough to find a friend who's willing to work with you, that can be quite a bit cheaper

Seriously... if i wanted to learn how to build a computer... sure i could hire someone to do it for me, but why do that when i get this infromation for at AT?

Same thing goes for weight training. I mean not the best comparison, but you know what i mean.

The computer you can take your time on. I'm out of time. I have to do this now, so I can get off the last medicine, get over the exgirlfriend, and move on andfeel good.

spending the ~$500 i spent on the personal trainer last school year was about the best money I could have spent. $500 would have bought me what, another monitor, maybe a new Pentium? Instead I finally learned how to lift properly (never did any serious lifting before), do a variety of excersices, was forced to go when sometimes I didn't feel like it (I was paying money for it, after all!) and helped thru those last tough reps. I'm missing not having it this summer, but when I was paying ~$15/lesson, its tough to stomach paying $50 at a real gym. Now I get to accost randomn people at the gym for a spot on the bench, I'm sure that they love that. When I go to Georgia Tech in the fall, I will definitely be getting one again.

not to mention that I am in the best shape of my life, down from 182 lbs to 162 with more muscles than I ever had (probably lost 30 lbs of fat)--actually some definition on my runner's frame! 6 feet tall BTW

I think that I should hit up a gym and perhaps lose some weight. I am a fatass, and not so happily so. (5'6" 175 lbs)

Sounds like a good plan for you. Get a contract so if you don't lose the guranteed 8 pounds every month, you won't have to pay him.

Obviously you should avoid 2 bit uneducated morons in basketball shorts and jerseys... a good personal trainer not only has personal experience, but is college educated and certified through a nationally accredited organization such as ACSM/ACE/etc. Required knowledge includes not only program design but anatomy, biomechanics and general/muscle physiology.

I think the OP made a good choice, assuming his trainer is knowledgeable.
