My cat opens doors too, but worst of all a couple months ago she's learned to turn on the lights (jumps and hits the wall switches).

It was cute at first, until she realized that it works pretty good to get me outta bed in the morning. I could easily sleep/ignore the cat knocking everything off the nightstands trying to wake me, but I cannot ignore the burning light entering my eyes.

Her days are numbered.:disgust:

Nice!! Kill that stupid cat!!

He wouldn't get out. When we put him in the car, he just shakes like crazy and tries to hide his head. Only dog I've ever met who doesn't like cars.

Your dog is smart alright. You just have no idea how to train him. Read Culture Clash or Dog Talk.

Change the door handles immediately. That's the kind velociraptors can open too, very dangerous for you.

And to think, a Velociraptor was next on my pet list. I was going to get one from the fine folks at Clone-aid. Is this a bad idea?

LOL! This thread is funny.

I only recommend this suggestion if the cat is relatively old.

Yes, unfortunately my cat is still somewhat young and still has 7 lives left. If I strangle her, she'll just show up again the next moring, but this time with an attitude.......I am a coward.

No, and I don't plan to. I don't need to see the dog blown away.

My point is that my dog would have just cowered in the back seat in that situation.

Ah collies. They are quite impressive dogs even though they have taken a beating with the breeding to make their poor little heads sleek like a racing car.

Boxer? Yeh don't worry about your friend having a lot of intelligence coming out of their dog. They are such sweethearts and fun to be around but they just don't really care about much except food, water, toys, treats and attention. Collies on the other hand are constantly thinking.

Your best bet is to just do a simple lock. Even the little eye locks are great but you have to put it up high enough that your pup isn't able to reach it. But with that kind of intelligence, those little things would be jiggled out in time. So get a different doorknob with a lock on it.

Animals are great. Leopard and I have two cats and they give us our run in laughter. I'd love to have a dog as well but nowhere near enough energy for one unless it were small and Leopard calls small breeds "munchies for real dogs." It's just a joke as he loves all dogs but doesn't want a small one.

I notice Skimble, our eldest, preening in the mirror at times. One night I watched as he puffed himself up and went, "Mrew." He then looked sideways and puffed up a bit different and said, "Meow." He did this several times in different positions with different sounding meows until I couldn't hold in the laughter any more! He was just way too cute!

LOL Indeed!

Btw, is it possible your door isn't latching shut? Sometimes the doors get a little warped and although it looks and feels closed if you put a little pressure on the door it'll pop open. You can adjust the latch on the frame if that's the problem. Possible the dog just bumps it open, and doesn't even touch the handle... but... Eitherway, gotta watch out for them 'raptors.

Not possible at all. This morning, I closed the door and even pushed it to make sure it wouldn't pop open. The door was definately closed.

When we used to keep our dog on the lanai she would see turkeys and other birds in the yard and try to chase them. It got to the point where she was bitting the vertical wood bars that go from the floor to the railing just enough so she could climb through, she makes me think of a beaver, heh. We had to replace them and put a baby gate over it, along with horizontal pieces of wood so there is no way she could get out.

I just remembered, when I was a kid, we stayed with some of my parent's friends in Knoxville when we attended the World's Fair. They had a German Shepherd who not only opened doors, but also rang the back doorbell when he wanted back in.

Not latching shut. LOL

Here's a hint ... dogs can open doors if they get their minds around it. I worked animal care and was almost shredded by a part husky, part shepherd, part wolf that knew how to open doors. Long story but the gist of it was that a coworker screwed up with this territorial dog (big boy!!!!) and he almost got to me. It was fun (I hope you notice sarcasm) trying to hold the one door shut with my foot as he was using his paws to open the ROUND door knob and grabbing with my hands for the emergency phone because if I had tried to get out the next door the big fella would have gotten into the waiting room where there were already customers waiting.

Not to mention that my parents' one dog can open some kinds of fridges.
