Well gee, let's see. If you knew your mom/dad/sister/brother/wife/husband/son/daughter had some disease and there was hope through diagnostics and medical intervention, but didn't know the outcome in 6 months would be that said
person would succumb, would you pay for treatment in the meantime, or would you say "eh, doubt you'll make it so... can I have your stuff?"
I paid $1600 for a chance at a few more years, only to have my dog pass away that same night - even though my dog basically told me the night before that would be our last together. My sister paid probably $16,000 to spend another year with her dog. In the end it's just money, and money is worth nothing compared to the unrequited love and companionship a pet often provides. What else are you going to do with the money? Buy some useless material good with it that's meaningless in the end?
