just get the avg price of a couple stores and give it to him... it's the most fair and I don't see why he would argue it if he's been so willing to cooperate since admitting fault.

I am really sorry to hear this happen to you Have you considered having his dog put down or at least be sent to obedience school? Not for revenge, but for safety of others. If this dog attacked once, I am sure it will attack again. I was in a similar situation when I was walking my dog once and it got attacked by an unleashed neighbor's dog, but luckily I was able to protect my dog and he only suffered minor injuries. I talked to my neighbor and because my dog didn't die we came to an agreement that he pay for medical bills and he sends his dog to obedience school. Best of luck.

This is not a flame but...

If we are discussing average cost for a dog then I have think twice about everything here. This guy may be attempting to do the right thing even if there is no right conclusion to this. Use your God-given judgement. If you believe him, then do what you think is best to settle. I'm sure you don't need a panel full of sympathy to reach a number. If not, then go for the juggernaut. What is the big deal over a few hundred dollars if you truly believe he's responsible and negligent for the death of your pet? Putting a price on this dog's life is petty IMO. I am sincerely sorry for your loss, but the way this thread was presented really turns me off.

In all fairness to the OP, I'd be pissed off too at the way he said the one dog owner originally acted too. Any pet owner would probably be pissed off. Had the guy had showed some type of remorse then the situation would of been presented totally different. I don't fault him for the way he presented it this way.

if he doesnt pay for the dog, then you should...

have your wife put a leash on you, with a weapon of your choice. have your wife knock on the door, as soon as he opens the door bolt thru like a bat out of hell and beat his dog to death while of course slipping out of the leash. after your all thru and done and satisfied, tell your wife to tell him exactly what he told you, and then afterwards let him know you'll pay for his dog and then dont pay.

this sounds so silly, but its worth a try

Do you want another dog of the same type? Why not ask him if you can look around for another dog and find one you two like and then he will pay for it.

If you just want the money. Get 3 price qoutes and ask him for the middle one.

Second, your "negotiation" should be for a replacement animal of equal value.

Pets are property, have him buy you a new puppy.

I agree. As sad as it is these things happen, just get the guy to buy you a new dog.

That guys sounds like an irresponsible, heartless dick. :|

See this is uncalled for. The leash broke, it wasn't like the guy just let the dog go. And maybe he really didn't think the dog was hurt that bad. Also it sounds like he really wants to try and make things right.

I agree. It's one thing to find an animal of similar lineage to replace it, but trying to get more money is disgusting to me. If your dog was purebred from a breeder, get a dog from a breeder. If it came froma pet shop, get one from a pet shop.

And I'm also disturbd you care more about the money than making sure the other dog doesn't hurt anyone else.

Your attitude has gone from "Oh my poor dog died in my arms" to "Wow! They can sell for how much? I want more money!"

A couple of questions:

1) What was the breed of the other dog?
2) What sort of attempt did the owner make to stop the dog once it got off leash? Did he run after it or just saunter across the street.

I would definitely check all the local laws on dogs. Make sure you contact the PROPER authorities, police, animal control, etc... The dog and owner were not threatened and so the attack was unprovoked. I would pursue this to the extent of law including having the other dog put down if that's what the law says or having it registered as a vicious dog, etc... If the dog attacked once unprovoked it is likely to do it again.

I sit here posting from the hotel with rocky stretched out after breakfast, and can't imagine how horrible that was for you

Keep it short and respectful. Offer that asshat every consideration he did NOT offer you initially. Find a replacement pup, give him the price, and move on.

I talked to him on the phone and he told me to go find estimates on how much it would cost to replace the pet

Tell him priceless. Sorry you lost a good friend like that.

Man... If something like this ever happened to my Cinnamon, I would be HELLA pissed.. My Chow is one of my family..

I couldn't name a price on my dog. Sure, we got her for free, she is Chow and Golden Retriever, not a purebreed or anything, so her "property" value isn't high at all.

Welse Corgi's are good dogs, my old friend had one, very very nice dogs...

I think the owner should replace the dog, pay vet bills, and have his dog put down. His dog could attack any other dog or person. It is deemed dangerious now that you know how vicious his dog is. If the owner didn't even try and stop the dog, he should get castrated..

hmm i do not htink you get paid Emotional damages for a pet being killed. They consider the pet property.

vandalism, then...

i mean, sh.it, this prick deserves to be taught a legal lesson. i say emotional damages, emergency bills, and the price of a showdog welsh corgi puppy...

i feel so terribly for you, man if i lived close by, i'd egg his house for you and then take a hot crap on his car.

If the guy's dog killed yours, that means that there's more to be done than collecting damages for the crime. His dog may need to be destroyed by the local authorities. Dogs are routinely destroyed for less(biting, aggressive behavior).

if a dog can really cost that much, then we have a right to get that much right?

All you need is the pedigree and/or certification for the pooch, and you're good to go!

If a dog did that to my dog, I would beat the sh1t out of it. if it tried to bite me, I'll rip it's jaw open.

like everyone else said, get a proper adjustment for your dog and tack on emotional + time spent to deal with all the mess.
