It sucks that your dog died, but I don't see it being something to get all sue crazy over.

What kind of dog attacked yours?

The biggest problem was the attitude of the guy. If he ran after his dog to try to get it to stop, etc. and was concerned and sorry for what had happened then I don't know that I would even try to get a bunch of money. Vet costs as a minimum.

This stuff happens...dogs will fight. Now...the other dog going straight for the neck and killing yours is not exactly normal.

I don't know how much a dog like that would cost...is it some special breed? The most my dad has ever spent on a pet was $300 for a cat.

We once had a cat that got hit by a car and had it's leg broken. Cost $600 in vet bills to have him all fixed up and a month after he was all healed he was hit and killed by a car.

wow.

well-trained dogs that go out in public shouldn't fight... that's where owners come in. that's why owners are accountable for their animals' actions. that's why people have been sent to jail over their dogs biting or killing people.

But they will fight. No ammount of training will change the fact that these are animals with deep-buried instincts and primal urges. Sometimes it will just happen, trained or not.

Go to court. You will probably get a fairer judgement that what the guy privately wants arranged. I'd ask for his dog to be destroyed as well before that happens again.

Maybe the guy wants to settle out of court because his dog may have done something like this before.
Sorry for your loss OP.

Jesus! I never heard of such violence between dogs like that. What kind of dog does he have? What kind of dog was your buddy?

Please accept my sincerest condolences.

I think that you should ONLY put the dog's life at stake if he refuses to take care of your losses ... you really have him by the balls, i just dont think its right for any dogs to be put down intentionally.. Just let him know you will put his dogs life into the hands of a judge if he doesn't take care of you.. remember, having his dog killed makes you no better than him in a way..

<- 2nd year law student

here are some remedies you could get in court (off the top of my head):
1.) cost of vet
2.) costs of burial (if you guys had some sort of funeral, and such associated costs)
3.) cost of a similar corgi (regardless of how much you, or gift giver paid)
4.) immunization/registration/costs and such that went into the corgi that you had
5.) injunction ordering to have his dog put down

i'm sure there are others if you really want to throw the book at him, but 1~4 are more than fair and you should be able to recover such costs with an arbitrator.

hope you feel better soon.

I concur. Seriously would talk to the police. I know that it's his pet and all, but a dog that bites once, will surely do it again. I'd want his dog put down for the safety of other animals and people as well.

Bummer too by the way and I wish you the best. My puppy (Bull-boxer) is having a problem with a torn pad on her foot and I will probably take her in tomorrow. I know how bad I feel just for that little bit of pain my dog is in.
