I only discovered this today, three days after installing my router. Its a Netgear MR814, connected through a Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem to a computer running Windows XP Pro.
I had installed the DUN card a week or two back as a backup for my cable connection. I subscribed to Netzero Platinum, Netscape (it was only $1 a month for two months while they were beta testing), and NatISP ($3.95 a month). My dialup connections worked, though I had to unplug the power to my cable modem to use the dialup, since I was otherwise already connected. It was no problem to pull the power cord on the cable modem for a little while, use the DUN, and then plug in the power to the cable modem again. Everything worked fine.
Then on Friday I installed the router because I wanted NAT for extra security, on top of the software firewall I was already running. It seemed all I had to do was rewire the cable modem through the router and the router to my ethernet connection. I looked at the installation guide, and it told what settings the router needed configured to. BUT - when I checked my LAN settings, everything was already configured just right for the router. DHCP to get an IP address was checked, there was no subnet mask in use, automatic lookup was checked - everything seemed fine without my making a single change. But tonight I learned my DUN isn't working anymore - it can't dial, and when I go to Control Panel and click on Phone and modem options, I get a message that telephony isn't working. But I checked the DUN modem and it is supposedly working.
Now I just went into Local Area Connections, checked the WINS tab, and under NetBIOS the first box is checked - "Default - use NETBIOS setting from DHCP server. If static IP address is used (It is) or the DHCP server does not provide NetBIOS setting, enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP." (DHCP is enabled).
The third box says "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP."
Is this where the problem with my DUN lies? Does the third box need cheecked for me to go back to using DUN, and then I have to switch back to the first box to use LAN? Or is it something else?
