My DVD drive can't read Crysis

First let me say that this is the legit retail version. I don't pirate PC games. I have a 20X SATA LiteON DVDRW and it absolutely can't handle the Crysis DVD. It spins up and then I hear kachunk, vroom, kachunk, vroom... I've been reinstalling software all weekend because I just reformatted, and the drive has no problems on any other disc, including other games. I had to put the disc in another PC's NEC 16X PATA DVDRW, share the drive over the network, and install that way. Does anyone else have this problem? At this point I might have to image the disc on the other PC, copy the image, then mount it in daemon tools. Or just go get a crack.

Crysis features Sony's SecuROM DRM and the associated issues that come with it. Checkout some of the links in the SecuROM discussion thread..

If you are using Daemon Tools, uninstall it, and then run the SPTD installer / uninstaller and if it has uninstall as an option, select it, otherwise exit it. (SPTD is used by both Alcohol and Daemon Tools). Sony's SecuROM blacklists (and thus you have to constantly update Daemon Tools and Alcohol 52%) virtual drive software along with several other legitimate applications such as Microsoft's Process Explorer.

Put the Crysis dvd-disc in boiling water for about 5-7 seconds. Seriously... I've had to use this method on few dvd-discs to get them to work correctly [also had to do this Phantasy Star Online CD for my Sega Dreamcast].

The disk is broken for me too.

If the dvd is clicking, then just let is sit in the driver for a little bit when the clicking stops, try to access the drive through my computer... Had to do that with mine...

fuck that, I am returning this game. I might buy it later when it is patched and doesn't have a CD clicking problem.

I have the same problem as the OP- I recently purchased a 20X SATA LiteON DVDRW (same as OP) and have the same issue... I believe it has to do with the DVD drive rather than the Crysis dvd. I hooked up my old DVD burner and the Crysis disk started up just fine.

I originally installed the game with my old DVD burner without an issue as well.

It's wierd because Crysis is the ONLY DVD that doesn't work so far in the new drive. I might return the LiteOn and get something else.

It's not just Liteon. I have a Phillips 20x DVD burner and it does the same thing.

Maybe It has something to do with the 20X drive??? My neighbor also has a 20X DVD burner that won't recognize the Crysis DVD....

My DVD drive does the same thing for Crysis. I actually popped the CD out to see if I had put it in wrong because it sounded like my machine was trying to read a friggen floppy disk, kachunk...kachunk...aaaah....kachunk. Sounds awful, probably not good for the DVD drive either, but after I left it in for about 20 seconds, the sounds went away and the data was viewable from explorer. The autorun didn't launch on it's own, probably because of how horrid and freakish securom is, so I had to run autorun from explorer.

Thanks for the replies everyone, glad to hear I'm not crazy. I went and grabbed a no-dvd crack, which works fine. I hoped to leave this kind of thing behind when I went legit and started buying all my games (i was poor in college). This type of thing drives me crazy, anyone so inclined can type crysis into a torrent site and have a better experience than a paying customer.

It's the DRM. Securom doesn't allow the disc to run from a SCSI device. SATA DVD burners show up as SCSI devices and thus won't work with the game. Had this problem with my SATA Blu-Ray/HD DVD combo drive. Game works fine from my secondary Lite-On DVD PATA burner.

EDIT: I figured it out. Crysis is INCOMPATIBLE with SATA DVD burners. Works perfectly with PATA drives and USB drives I tested. Does not work properly with SATA drives. Checked it on two computers/several drives.

Lotta ppl having the same issue:

These SecuROM issues have got to stop. It's not like it is stopping people from pirating the games and playing them with ease. Unlike previous methods of anti-piracy, this is the first one where I have heard about such a large number of problems from legit users. In the end, unless they fix all of these issues, I believe it will just convince more people to pirate and use cracks just to get their purchase to work.

The worst part about most of these DRM issues is that they hurt the users the legitimately purchased the games. The people pirating these aren't affected by the issues. Not condoning anything just wish they would get things fixed before they release it to the public.

Complaining on internet forums does little. Snail mail to corporate offices is more effective.

Though, companies that use Securom and Starforce don't particularly care about their customers to begin with.
