Good start. I agree with others that it may be the FSB holding you back at this point.

Drop the multi and the CPU volts and the mem ratio, and up the vmch and test for your highest FSB.

I think with all the unknowns of conroe, the isolate and consolidate theory is even more important. Until you test for max CPU,FSB, and RAM seperately you really don't know whats going on

Yes.. I lowered the RAM ratio and loosened RAM timings at first to max FSB.. then brought up everything else.

So what was your max FSB?

410 would boot, but crash eventually
405 would boot, but would super pi and prime95 errored
395 was the highest i could get to run super pi, but prime95 would error after a couple hours
385 is the highest i could run stable, but it was a little too hot for my likings (spikes in the upper 50C's when running superpi and prime95 simultaneously)

Right now I'm all the way down to 375, but I've lowered my voltages significantly in order to reduce heat. I've been running prime95 all day, and so far, it looks good.

I guess thats good news, in that it appears the mobo is whats stopping your overclock and the chip may actually have more in it

Honestly for me, if Prime 95 works for an hour or so, I'm more than satisfied. I wouldn't worry too much about more than that unless you start having problems with normal apps. At least in my situation, rarely does any prog heat up a processor at the creepingly higher rate that P95 does after hours and hours. Even extended gaming (say BF2) has enough breaks to let the processor cool a bit

Awesome overclock. However, where did you manage to get an E6600?

When I build a 6600 based system later this year I'll be satisfied with 3.0GHz, happy with 3.4GHz and ecstatic with anything over 3.5 (on XP120 or Tuniq 120 if it's available).

Can you post all of your BIOS settings here?

I think you can probably get to 3.4GHz with a lower vcore than 1.6v.

Yep. There's an Intel tool that will show you if it throttles.

http://www.hardware.fr/marc/TAT.exe

It'll throttle at 85C at the core. This tool also has a cpu-burn function. If your C2D doesn't throttle with this tool, it won't throttle with anything else since it heats up my C2D at 3.2GHz to almost 70C, while Prime95 only gets to 62C. And games are around 55C.

Sounds like you got unlucky and got a dud chip.

:Q

Wow, 3.6Ghz a dud? That's a great overclock as it is with Air Cooling. I'm sure with water cooling, some serious lapping and more tweaking, this would be an awesome chip..

Will it throttle if C1E and EIST are turned off on the BIOS and max temp is reached?

It should throttle as long as Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2) is still active.
