My E8400 seems fast enough, can't seem to justify an upgrade

The e8400 is what dell sold the most of in pc this Christmas so the rest of the world is just now catching up with you. You are not behind the curve at all. I'm still using a q6600 at stock speeds even though it overclocks to 3.3Ghz, because it does what I need it to at stock.

I have a computer in my living room that we use for web surfing, chromecasting, video watching, and word processing. Its an E8400 with 4GB memory and a 120GB SATAII SSD drive. I notice very little difference from when I use my i7 4770K with 16GB memory on a SATAIII SSD 512GB. I don't use it for gaming because the video card isn't up to snuff, but for everything else, this computer is fast and responsive. I have thought about upgrading, but there seems to be no purpose. Seeing this thread from 4 years ago makes me think what a great processor this was.

Yeaa except for gaming its okey but its the ssd that does it. Even vertex2 class is okey to. Try plug an old hd in lol

Are you OCing it? If not put on a $35 cooler and try to take it to 4.0Ghz. Well that is if your MB is adjustable.

I had an e8400 C0 stepping that I couldn't get past 3.9ghz no matter what I tried. That really bothered me

that is a good CPU, and probably more than capable for everything he needs.

Nowadays, I buy systems for the RAM. I never have CPU problems.

If this makes it any simpler, my e8400 with an SSD feels ever bit as fast as my i7-860 with an SSD in everyday use. Newer games run faster on the 860, and encoding would too (I don't do much of that other than MP3s).

But it sounds like you have a huge quanity of videos, so if you're actually creating those yourself, you will probably benefit from a quad core. Otherwise you'll benefit much, much more from an SSD. It makes a huge difference.

There is only 1 thing that matters with video encoding: will it be done within 2 minutes?

If the answer is no, it doesn't matter how long it takes, because you're going to do it ahead of time-- the night before, in the shower, when you wake up before going the airport, etc. Nothing takes more than 20 minutes on any current hardware anyways. So, I don't, and still don't see a point.

Streaming twitch is about the only thing I can come up with.
