Picture this:

It's 3:30pm, and I call my dad's insurance broker to see how much it'd cost to insure a 87 Chevette under my name. This is only with 3rd party liability, not collision mind you.
I'm 17, got a G2 licence (1 step before a "full" license in Canada), and the car is worth $900 tops.
So I'm thinking the person is going to say around $2500 or so.......
I call, tell them the car, my record (clean)......then they tell me the rate.

$3600 plus tax.

My mouth dropped.
That's more than 4 times what the car's worth!
I'm still in a state of shock.

Does it ever suck to be young and have a crap box car

Call one of those ghetto ass insurance companies. Here in Dallas we have them and they'll insure about anyone for $59/month for liability. I personally always carry full coverage but I can see the necessity for liability on something like that. Try another company man.

Heh, the value of your car has nothing to do with liability. Liability depends on the amount of damage your car is capable of doing to someone elses.

yeah i carry full coverage too, and lucky for it, a neighbor backed into my car and dinged up about $1k in damage...he had no insurance...he will be paying hte deductible though

anyways, it doesn't really matter what the car you are insuring is worth becuase you are insuring for damage to other cars not yours. shop around and you'll do better that 3.5k

Can't do that in Canada.
He already has a car, and when another comes in, it HAS To go under my name.
So basically I'm done over
The lowest I could possibly forsee is maybe $3200 + tax, which is still increadible.

And BTW: What kinda damage could a Chevette do to another vehicle?

yamahaXS, you could have sued him to get the full amount.
Why should your insurance have to pay for something that was his fault.
Won't it increase your premiums?

yea, Canada sucks.

Check this, my family has 3 cars insured.

94 Crown Victoria -- liability only
88 Oldsmobile Eighty-eight -- liability only
96 Mercury Sable -- collision + liability

All insured under my parents, but me and my sister can drive any of the cars.

Total Insurance is 2,200 plus or minus 5%.
By the way, I do not live in the boonies... My parents live in a suburb of Boston.

yamaha, like misterT said - you don't have to use your insurance on that. If it was a stranger who hit your car insurance would be good to cover it, but in this case you should not have to pay a nickle or claim on anything.

viper

I know it SUCKS. I guess in your case you're having to get primary on the car given your family car situation. I remember when I was 16 on an old VW I got a quote of $3500 a year. I think that was collision and comprehensive. However, I think if all you get is basic minimum everything $3600 is too much. I would guess you should be paying probabaly $2500-2800? I know it sucks, I guess this is what happens to young people. Last year I was 22 paying for minimum insurance on an old '89 accord and it still cost me $2k year. I think you being in the 16-18 category would up it to the $2500-2800 I guessed at.

In short, check another insurance company or find an insurance broker.

Is G2 the "graduated license" that came in a few years ago? If so maybe thats why the cost is higher. I managed to get my license just before that came in...

misterT its not that "canada sucks". If all of the insurance companies were raping us another one would come out and kill off the competition. The fact is young drivers cause a lot of accidents. Also your family is paying so little becuase your parents are primary drivers. My parent's didn't have to pay a heck of a lot extra to insure myself and my two brothers as ocassional drivers on their cars, but when we were old enough that we had our old cars we were still young enough that we got reamed for insurance since the cars were under our names.

Viperoni - my brother is going through the same garbage - $3000 to insure an '89 Sunbird!!!

Its your age, the fact that you are male, and your short driving history. Sucks, man!

The lady on the phone said it didn't matter if I had a full "G" license.
Damm I almost feel like moving down south
But really, anything over $1000 is too much for a Chevette, with a top speed of under 100mph, 16 second 0 to 60mph time, nobody on the road is in any real danger :Q

Yup, it's time to start thinking about saving for university, since I'm probably not gonna be able to have a car before then

I do feel for you. I was looking forward to getting a car when I was your age as well and then I got a quote on it and that just totally killed my dreams. There was no way for me to pay for it, because I was going to spend $3500 on a car, and then $3500/year on insurance was impossible for a high school kid without a job throughout the year. I think saving for university you'll be better off in the long run anyway

Viperoni, check other insurance companies. Especially, try the CAA which has way lower premiums for younger drivers than most other places.

I don't understand why young peope get into accidents to much.
I am 21 and logged over 100K miles in 5 years over 3 cars and 1 motorcycle:

Boston Driving:

3K on 94 Ninja 500
12K on 85 Lincoln Town Car
12K on 82 Grand Prix
77K on 96 Mercury Sable

Never had 1 damn accident.

Moving Violations:

Warning for doing 75 in a 50
Ticket for doing 50 in a 35.. appealed, went to court and was thrown out
Ticket for doing 74 in a 50 in NH... went head and paid it... 80 bucks.

What the hell is wrong with kids getting into accidents? All my friends have like 2-3 accidents. Are they just dumb? Or should I be one of the drivers in those car commerials that do all the stunts.

Funny how I always beat my friends in car racing games too.... hehe
