I didn't know anyone provided T1 anymore.

It's still extremely common. We have around 30 satellite office with the majority being T1's or, if you're really lucky, two T1's. I always wonder why they just didn't do some business class cable or something but what they wanted was for the provider to tunnel the traffic to our connection. I really think the whole thing could have been handled better with a faster cable connection and a hardware VPN client at the office.

I feel your pain.
They have been promising to upgrade/replace our laptops for several years now. Still using a Compaq 6910p with 2GB ram here. Thankfully on XP, so there is at least SOME ram for applications. But this thing runs like a dog.

My work got me an E5300 with 3 GB. Not awesome, but fine for what I do.

Also got a dual monitor setup, all I had to do was ask. Only dual 17" though, 1440x900 each. Kinda jealous of the ones who got dual 1080p screens. But I ain't complaining.

We still have a few here. The problem with T1's is the cost. That kinda copper ain't cheap compared to other technologies and what can be run on business-class coax these days.

We recently moved everyone off of 69XX series onto 8460 or 8470. SSD makes everyone happy.

I would bring my own pc to work before I would use such an awful system. As it is I have a great desktop at work but I have seriously though about bringing in some of my monitors from home, dual 4:3 19" lcds are very limiting when you are used to triple 23" displays.

I finally got a new laptop for work... a Dell Latitude E6530. They let me customize it to my liking, so I got all of the stuff that I needed for work (lots of memory, storage, and a 1080p screen), and none of the stuff that I didn't (No bluetooth, webcam, or BluRay player). It came out to about $1100.

Sure beats the old Core 2 Duo with a 14" 720p screen I had before.

So true, I have Win 7 64 with an SSD, makes my aging E8400 bearable. My scanner's software won't run on 7 so I have to boot to XP when I need to scan something, (not very often thank god), I couldn't imagine how I lived with the boot times for so long LOL. I usually go get some coffee while it's booting and hopefully it's done and ready by the time I get back. As for OP's situation the employer is F-ing themselves by making him use an ancient machine with newer bloatish software, if you were paying someone to rebuild an engine would you get him the cheapest dollar-general socket set and then wonder why it's taking him forever to get it done??, stupid..

My old scanner has the same issue of no win7 driver, I run linux Mint in a VM and it works out of the box with the scanner using xsane to scan.

this is pretty much what IT tells us to do when we come to them with old slow comp issues. its either "spill beer on it" or "leave it on the roof of your car and drive out of the parking lot"

They brought in another T1 after I complained so many time. But we'd had it for a month and they won't "activate" it. Whatever that means.

Take an ethernet cable, and plug it from one lan-port into another lan-port on your router. That way it will recycle the data and you'll go twice as fast.

Next, a get USB to ethernet adapter and plug a USB port from your laptop into the ethernet port. This will let you store data from your USB port in your ethernet memory, which is much faster than reading it from your blue ray hard drive.

If you have a bluray burner with this setup you can download the whole internet to disc.

Benefits of T1 Internet Service

T1 internet service provides a number of business benefits that cheaper consumer-grade bandwidth cannot provide, including the following:

Guaranteed Bandwidth

A dedicated T1 provides your business with dedicated bandwidth, which means your speeds will be the same all the time instead of up and down. This means that users outside your business cannot bog down or slow your connection during peak usage hours, as often happens with cable or DSL. You get a guaranteed amount of bandwidth that is reliable and constant–just what every business needs.

Reliability and Stability

T1 Lines are generally more stable and reliable than cable or DSL options. Additionally, T1 Lines from Vergent come with an SLA that provides 99.999% uptime, guaranteed. In the rare event of an outage, you can be sure that Vergent will work overtime to restore connectivity as soon as possible.
