So I was sitting in the cafeteria, and some guy asks me if I want to join a listening / discussion. So I join them, we introduced ourselves, played a short game, then they opened up their Bibles -- I was kind of shocked but intrigued. They read quotes out loud and discussed them. I was completely incredulous as to how could read that book and think its reality. I felt like they were from another planet.
And Christians say how belief is a choice. BS. Belief is not a choice. I, as a rational person, conditioned in a non-religious environment, not only do not have the capacity to believe stories of supernatural beings, but am amazed at how others can.
We didn't go into things too deeply, but I did touch on key issues like the problem of evil, why one religion is right over another, how belief stems from where you are born, the 1+ billion Muslims that are going to hell for not receiving Christ, etc. Basically what I ascertained from them is that: To believe, I must believe. Actively studying the Bible is what will prove God to me.
Turns out these people were fundamentalists. They believe the Bible, word for word, literally. They don't believe in macro evolution -- they say washed up as a theory, and is being abandoned. One of them offered me scientific proof for the Bible (he didn't have it on him, though -- aww).
Anyhow, they behaved exactly like salespeople. They asked me for my phone number, and wanted me to sign up for Bible study with them. I told them that starting with the Bible as the truth is not the proper way to go about beliefs -- that it should come from my own conclusions. So I said goodbye and that was that.
