My experience with the R9 Fury in 2017

So first things first, temperatures, heat output and noise.

Coil whine is a thing on this card, it's not annoying because it don't bother me that much, it's not a high pitched ugly sound like some cards, it's just a sound of the GPU working..

Heat wise temps never rise above 75c, however the heat output into the room is real, i can feel this thing working, it's around equal with a Fermi GTX 480 in this regard.

Performance.

Batman Arkham Knight maxed out 1440P VSR 45-60FPS V-sync enabled.. nothing to say really, runs awesome.
Battlefield 4, 1440P maxed no MSAA 70-120FPS.. flawless..
BF1 DX12 mode 80-140 FPS 1080P
Rise of The Tomb Raider high preset 1080P 70-90 FPS most of the time with some spikes above that.

GTA V maxed settings 4xMSAA 39-70 FPS .. runs flawlessly.

Now VSR and scaling games above 1080P is hit or miss, despite wanting to run Batman in 4K VSR.. i got met with huge screen corruption, it will only work up to 2560x1440 VSR which is kind of annoying as the Fury would handle the game at 30FPS just fine in 4K.

1440P does provide a substantial image quality increase in Batman.

Overclocking is very limited.. latest driver locks the GPU to 300mhz if i OC it..

Over all not the best card i have really used, it's been an up and down ride so far but it's far from a bad card, it performs wickedly, i just wished some of the features were better tested and working, there is still a feeling of the driver team being behind Nvidia in this regard, but not too big of a deal i still got to play my games and that is what matters the most.

4GB Vram never showed a single problem at all, even when capping out needing 6GB Vram.. zero stutter and the memory bandwidth seems to feed the GPU just fine, i have a feeling the bandwidth on tap is what really helps the frame buffer stay filled even when it is over flowing.

It's an impressive card, but the heat output, coil whine, poor overclocking and slightly lack luster drivers are still cons.

9/10 it's a great card, it seems to be outside factors that bring it down more so than the card it's self.

This is a great video, this is the TRI-X version it is 50mhz clocked lower than the version i have at stock which is the NITRO OC+ model.

I'm very happily using Fury since 04.2016 , got it for the price of gtx980 and it's faster. A month later gtx1070 launched and was over 50% more expensive at my place. So I never had a reason to complain Heat output is noticable. I hope AMD will still provide good drivers for it in the future as they are today.

Steve from Hardware Unboxed put it in top5 GPU's in recent years https://youtu.be/MyusptZhTfA?t=437. The supply of this card was always low, and it is low still. gtx980 dropped in price so I could actually sell the Fury now and get 980Ti instead but naah thanks

I paid 260 for mine earlier this year, for the price.. it's an amazing card.

9/10 for high heat output, coil whine, poor overclocking and slightly lack luster drivers seems very generous to me...

I had one until June. Wattage is a bit high, but it's a decent performer still and I had the Tri X which was quiet. But I wanted something faster for a bit less energy so I decided to leave it behind for a 1080 11Gbps. AMD Overwatch drivers just aren't that good, part of the reason.

With Fury OC usually being rather limited, I figure a max OC 1060 6GB at 2-2.1Ghz would be as fast as a max OC Fury anyway for much less power. So not sure what the market is for a Fury now, maybe miners might still want my old one.

I had one until recently. I too couldn't get very much out of overclocking, but it did undervolt enough to significantly reduce heat output. Combined with the hugenormous Tri-X heatsink, it was very quiet. Coil whine wasn't that much worse than other cards.

While it was an underrated card in its time, latterly I began to feel that it wasn't quite good enough for 4k. For instance I am currently playing Grim Dawn, and I had to turn down a few settings to keep the framerate acceptable, whereas my shiny new Vega 64 LC never drops below a V-Sync limited 67 fps even with all the settings turned up.
