My extreme LCD gaming monitor

I thought I'd show off my latest upgrade, my new Sharp 32" monitor. The display is up and running fine at 1920x1080 (1080p). It is beautiful, and everything looks/feels very high in quality. Sharp's packing was better than expected as I had this shipped from NY to Japan via USPS. It was not double boxed or anything, yet it arrived in great condition despite the fact the box was a bit beat up.

I'm using this only as a computer monitor at the moment, but may add an XBOX 360 later on. My eyes are about 30" to 36" away from the screen, I'm finding that getting any closer and the pixels begin to become visable (I'm pretty picky). From this distance however, everything is clear and ledgible.

Anyhow, gaming is great, but games that are not capable of using antialiasing are at a real disadvantage for PQ at this dot pitch. Developers really need to get this figured out (for the XBOX 360 & the PC), most already have, but some still have issues (ie STALKER, BIOSHOCK, R6 Vegas, etc...).

So far I have not identified any dead/stuck pixels, but I do see some in my long shutter photo that could have some issues (I circled them in the picture below). Also of note, as a fan of silent computing, is the screen does not make any unwanted noise (a nice change from my CRT).

So here are some pictures for your enjoyment:

5 second shutter - no visable banding, but you may notice about 6 pixels that may be suspect, althogh I cannot find them by visual inspection.

There' lots of people who like the idea of a larger screen. But the 30" model's with 4MP resolution are a bit expensive (especially if you have to upgrade to cutting edge graphics for games), so a slightly lower resolution display like this is just the ticket.

Mabye it's just me, but of your 900 posts on these forums, I bet most of them were less informative than this one.

Looks good! My aunt has the 46" D62U Sharp model and it's spectacular.

Btw -- time to upgrade your sound system there bud! Those Altec Lansings were good back in the CRT days, but I'd recommend something with a bit more uumph now, like a nice set of Logitech Z-5500's .

A lot of people care... People complain about no user reviews of certain products and then they bitch when someone writes a review and write it off as someone bragging. Regardless of what you believe was the OPs intent, this is extremely informative and great for those of us who were curious how this LCD-TV would hold up as a monitor.

As the saying goes, if you are not interested, why comment in this thread?

Obviously, I've put my pennies in another basket. LOL
Actually, I just picked up some Onkyo bookshelves and a Boston Sub...they sound much better. But I usually wear my headphones while gaming anyway.

The level of detail is great. However, to me there appears to be an increased level of reddish/pinkish tint (especially prevelant in Supreme Commander and Dirt). I am not sure if it is your camera or the TV's Tint is uncalibrated.

How much did you pay?

NVM- Looked it up around 1000? Not a bad deal considering it does do 1080p even for gaming that's a great resolution. It has hookups for your 360 and stuff? maybe I'll do that instead of getting a 30" monitor...

Just wondering, how do you stay 3 feet away from your monitor? Really long desk? I'm still back in the stone ages of LCD technology with my 15" KDS piece of crap, but sitting around 2 feet is sort of leaning back with my arms extended to my keyboard and is rather uncomfortable.

Lol I wonder if our future health risks are going to be buring holes in our eyes from looking straight into 30"+ monitors all day. not that it will stop me from playing pc games, lol just saying.

4ft away, seriously, how can you read text? I have to sit with my eyes at least 30" away or I can see the pixels, I'm most comfortable at about 36". It's very relaxing not only on my eyes, but also for my whole body. Before I was looking at a 19" (18" viewable) CRT with 1600x1200 resolution, to read text or work within windows, I was always hunched over my desk. Now I can sit back and relax, and see everything without strain, it's great!

Nice review, I'm definitely considering an LCD HDTV and put it to use as a computer monitor on top of its HDTV/TV/movie/videogame console use, so posts like these are always appreciated, ignore the idiots saying otherwise.

Very nice.
Thanx for the pics

I'm not a fan of using TVs as monitors per say (prefer my 2560x1600), but i will say that i would indeed be getting an Aquos if i was going that route

You know what people don't care about? Your worthless post. Do everyone a favor and STFU the next time you want to post something.

Great post miahallen. I've been considering the 30" Dell LCD but the resolution may be too high for me (2560x1600). With that res, 1080p material will need to be scaled UP, and that's something I'd like to avoid. I think 1920x1080 is a perfect resolution for normal computing, gaming and HD material. However, I'm looking at getting a 40" LCD (Sony KDL-40XBR4) and plan to sit 2'-3' away. How bad is that dot pitch on a 32"?

And thanks for taking the time to take those pics. I hate it when people describe their set up but don't include pics. Pics help a lot.

I have a Dell 3007WFP that I bought because I got a very very good deal. I've gotten used to it, but the dot pitch is too small, and the number of pixels is too high. At work I have a 19" lcd, which has a dot pitch (and therefore font size) that I prefer. I sit about 3.5-4 feet away from the 19".
Unless you really need the high res for productivity, I'd avoid the 2560x1600 screens. I'm considering selling mine because I mainly use it for web browsing and gaming.

You'll have to sit a lot further than 2-3 feet away for the 40"

Nah, I should be fine at that distance. I just don't want these big pixels staring at me.

For those wondering, the pixel size is 0.357 mm - nig, but not too bad. I'd probably sit about 1.5 - 2 feet away with my bad eyes.

WTF? Are you being serious? You mean a whole 11" of OLED for $1700+ (And at 11", it ain't impressive)? Or 30" of OLED in 2009 (most likely with a $10,000 price tag)?
