I paid $950 for a two bedroom townhouse, bills totally amounted to about $300 a month, we had about $2000 left over each month.

And we lived in a nice area.

Thing with london is that wages dont even come close to Los Angeles.

As an example someone with a CCNA might make $70k min in LA, but in London they make $50k. But cousin makes this with his CCNA working for a global bank in central London.

So its always a little good a little bad anywhere I guess.

Well although I haven't lived in the UK I think you need to look at taxes, wage differences, and benefits. For example what are you paying for healthcare, daycare, transportation, food, utilities, housing, etc. For me it was much better to live in Europe despite the extra taxes and lower wages. At another point though it wasn't so you have to do the math. Another benefit that I enjoyed was getting 3x the vacation. If you have any inclination to start your own company be aware that what might work in the US could be very difficult due to taxes and regulations in Europe.

Just do the full math. You have two cars here and can ride the tube in London. You might find that the $20K per year difference isn't as big as you thought. Like I said above times change and I've gone back and forth because of it.

So after that catchy headline got some of you in, I wanted to open up a discussion about this.

I live in the Los Angeles area and between us we do make over $100k and it barely feels like we scrap by each month.

Which is frankly ludicrous I know.

If we live in Florida we'd own a home and be living the high life, but SOCAL just seems to suck you dry for everything. Anyone else live here or in expensive parts of the country and experience this bizarre situation and what did you do about it if anything?

I can't help but imagine this is directed at me.

You cannot live a high life in the best parts of Florida (pretty much Orlando and south) on just $100k.

You said your kids have to go to school in the area, yet are home schooled?!?!?

My fiancee worked in local 'jails' as well in Corrections.

It's a good job, $40-50k starting and benefits. The hours are 24/7 though and usually 3-4 12 hour shifts a week. Fortunately, she was able to get daytime only during the week.

Another good option if you have that background is become a government armed guard for something like a Social Security office. $50-60k and better benefits plus 9-5 with all holidays off.

What in the world makes you think this thread has anything to do with you?!

Well Florida, $100k salary, an SO that worked in a jail and a prior SO that was home schooled. Cisco certifications and IT background.

Plus some L&R back and forth already.

Probably a coincidence hence why I sad I can't help to think versus doing what you do and go raging retard and say "I KNOW!".

hope this helps you.

First, no one is going to take a CCNA seriously as far as giving you a high paying job. It's a 3-6 month deal at a very leisurely pace. You are simply qualified to touch the gear.

Also assuming that CCNA is in Route and Switching...otherwise those are about a 1-3 month journey and you know even less.

I'd recommend taking down CCNP, that can be done in 6 months or less. You may have a bit of investment (under $1000), but it's much more respected and you now have a full understanding of everything the CCNA was tested on. You still may need Google, book references and the like, but you can be a serious player.

Take 12-18 months and do your CCIE and you are pretty much guaranteed a nice living anywhere you end up and never face unemployment.

Of course if Brain Dumping is your thing all bets are off.

Fact is living in certain places is near impossible on $100k per year if you want a NICE life and NICE toys in that life and NICE experiences.

I have 4 dependents now. My income when I was single allowed me to pretty much go out every night and enjoy myself and others. Now I have to make sacrifices. Even at around $150k per year I had to adjust things when there were others in my life and/or wanted to live a certain way.

No one is really free until you make close to the Forbes list which this year has a cutoff of 1.55 BILLION dollars, last year you would have made it on $1.50 BILLION.

I really don't think you need $1.5B dollars. You're really getting away from the point of the thread.

I enjoy living in the midwest, 4 seasons, save ~30 of our take home and still have lots left over for fun things.

Exactly. and honestly if I was reduced to eating popcorn for diner i'd know my life had taken a seriously shitty turn for the worse.

I'm not saying we are broke, not exactly struggling. But had you told me when I first came to America cutting down trees in Florida making only $320 a week than in 10 years time we've be making $100K Plus a year, i'd be like "fuck yeah i'm set".

But whats sad is I dont feel that way at all. For instance, we dont eat out, dont have cable TV, turn the AC off during the day. Have a 2012 car and a 14 year old car. No credit cards pay everything in cash, except for the car.

It just feels like life should be a lot easier than I feel it is.

Maybe its just America...

Funnily enough when I earned $320 a week in 2002 I felt better off than I do now. But I didn't have kids either, so i'm sure that contributes to it.
Sounds just about exactly the same as my position in San Diego, down to age of cars, lack of cable, and no AC.

I moved to Colorado. I won't say we suddenly felt wealthy, but not quite as hand-to-mouth, while getting a nicer house and better school.

I really don't think you need $1.5B dollars. You're really getting away from the point of the thread.

You have to always make exceptions until that price point.

Maybe it's the $500 1976 Dodge Dart vs a lightly used Vespa to get to work.

Maybe it's going to Paris once per year or 4 vacations state-side.

Maybe it's picking a new Gulfstream jet vs an older one and customizing it.

I'd love to live many places, if I did even with a good income I'd be house poor or even APARTMENT poor.

Here is were I don't get this OP....

He gave us his rent...$2000 a month on $100K+ is not that bad. A mortgage would be a bit better at that rate due to the tax write off that is realized.

Outside of that he hasn't told us where his money goes.

Food costs are high now (I recommend people looking up the USDA guidelines, they have meal plans for the "thrifty"/poor, low cost, moderate and liberal).

Many people are simply eating outside their means and wasting. I am not a big snacker, never have been. I have kids now and they have been used to full grazing like my pets.

I have since shaved a bit off the costs. Just on my pet foods I shaved $332 per month and the food quality is equal or better. The added benefit for the cats, is they go crazy at meal times now. They truly look forward to a better meal at a lower cost, but it's a little more work for me.

These are my total costs per month based on a family of 5, (my fiancee pays her own gas, about $500 to food costs, plus buys her own lunches/etc):

Alarm Monitoring $21.50
Internet/Cable/Home Phone $209.00
Cancer Plan $8.90
Health plans$100 (only myself, my fiancee and her kids are covered, the 24 year old needs a plan, it high deductable but I have also free contacts/exams, wellness, $500k in life insurance / AD&D, and my dental is fully covered for my needs)
Flexible Spending $125 (going to increase this, tax free money)
Car Loan $446.61
Car Fuel $300.00
Cell Phones $115.00 (6 phones, one is for a poor kid and his family's only phone, I get reimbursed from my company for my phone plan fully)
Credit Payments $375.00 (My ex-wife's cards I got left with in a divorce plus a $9000 IRS bill I was left with)
DropBox $9.99
Electric $350.00 (average, goes from $250 to $550, turning off unused fans now and that is saving $30-50 a month...I can save more with a $800 investment to move my attic unit a bit)
Food $1,200.00 (working on this)
Fitness $74.00 (couple)
Insurance $295.00 (full 100/300/100 coverage on a 96 Honda Accord and 12 Mazda 3 GT)
Newspaper $0.00 (was $20 a month, I cancelled it 3 years ago and they still deliver)
School Loans $116.91 (<4% interest and a write off)
Sirius $16.50
Water $125.00 (average, getting closer to $90 now I have talked to the kids about starting a shower they don't get into right away)
Water Filter $8.00 (Aquasana)
Dog Food $55.00 (2 cans per day, was $190 a month for Merrick food, now on Kirkland Nature's Domain)
Cat Food/Supplies $150.00 (10 cats, was $72 per week on Science Diet, now on Grreat Choice, not a premium brand; but decent for cats)
Total $3,876.41

My mortgage is about to be $1479...about $1000 of it is a tax write off. That said, my house should be only about $500-600 a month, but I bought at the tail end of the boom.

So my net expenses per month hovers around $4200, with a gross of $62k a year.

I could definitely cut costs down A LOT more and this doesn't take into account any extras like going out or taking a weekend vacation at a hotel.

I am living in a lower cost area of the major Metropolitan area.

The above also doesn't take into consideration 401K savings and the like, I try to do 10%

My rent is $2000 a month, honestly I dont expect any answers because there aren't any for me, we cant move because our kids need to go to the school in this area.

I'm more interested in others stories and what they did to either make more money or downsize themselves.

We where thinking of moving to Montana as an example then my wife got a job at the local jail.
nothing to see here people, time to move on. Hand this thread over to Mayne, they can go back and forth with each other.

$1200/mo for food? holy fuck.

Your insurance is surprisingly expensive - if I break down my 6mo and 12mo policies to monthly, it's $84.50 at 50/100/50 for three vehicles. Have you tried other carriers? Geico is super expensive for me - Progressive is cheap.

I'm amazed how much people spend for cable. I despise commercials, though, so I'd much rather pay for Netflix/Prime and watch stuff there. There's stuff I miss, but it's worth it to not spend 20min out of every hour watching commercials (or paying $150/mo to DVR everything).

You can compare details back and forth, but one thing is inescapably true: the majority of people in the middle and lower income classes are making about what they were ten or twenty years ago. Meanwhile the COI has inched up a couple points every year, property taxes have inched up 4% a year, etc. For whatever reason the economy appears to be producing rapid gains at the high end, where capital can be put to work, and no gain whatever in the middle and lower tiers. That's bound to make people feel squeezed over time.
