I was taking out the trash and recyclables, and next to the bins was a table and a rack full of mostly older stuff. I grabbed:

- A P4 631 (3.00GHz LGA775) (I have no board or cooler to test this with)
- Some sticks of RAM - some PC100, and 2x256MB DDR400
- A webcam
- A USB hub
- A Model M

There were some other things, like an old Lexmark Z22 inkjet, a UPS, and some kind of Slot 1 or Slot A CPU, but I think I'm happy for now.

Anyone else ever find stuff without even trying to look?

there was some guy dumpster diving outside my office building last night... we throw old parts and whatnot into a dumpster outside, but we sell it to a scrap metal place.

when i was a kid, i lived in a apt and one night i go out to throw the trash to find one of those long dumpster FILLED with a bunch of toys and furniture, somebody got evicted. I ended up with a OLD computer, train set, and some other stuff. a friend of mine actually dug through the shit and found a pair of laser guns complete with helmets and chest piece. that day was spent playing laser tag in the woods.

No, this was just a few minutes ago. I forgot I also put a Linksys Wireless USB adapter and a Motorola DSL modem in my pockets.

Where in Chicago was all this thrown out?

Not too far from you, I live at Sawyer and Wrightwood, a block west of the monument.

EDIT: I like to check the Free Stuff section of Craigslist, I recently offered to pick up a used Asus DVD drive, the guy offered me whole computer sans hard drive too. 1GHz Athlon, 512MB RAM, etc.

I regularly go diving at my old place of employments dumpster, they handle insurance claims exclusively dealing with electronics. This stuff is sometimes older than I am, sometimes still NIB, usually about 1-2 years old though, and ALWAYS piles of it. It gets tossed since they cannot sell or refurb it (conflict of interest), literally a medium 'ster gets filled once or twice a month. I wish I could take all of it sometimes, but I'd need a box van.

Last month was:

Acer 5950G
Toshiba A100-172
Averatec 3200
Acer 1640
Older Dell Inspiron (ended up not working)
Various fully working and non-working PC's (usually P4 3.06 ish level)
Apple 30" HD monitor
Acer 19" monitor
Xbox 360
Canon SD1100
DLink DIR-655 router
A really sweet looking floor buffer from the 70's (it's brand new minus one dent in the chrome)

Anyone in Ottawa who might need something PM me, I'll see what I can find of decent quality.

I found my first gaming computer in a trash can. Around 2003-2004.

A P4 2.26ghz
512MB PC2100
Geforce 3
40Gb HDD
DVD drive

It worked just fine. IDK WTF was wrong with those people.

just buy a new cable, it'll be far easier in the long run than using an adapter.

It's part no. 1390120 - will there be a cable with PS/2 and that weird connector on the other end?

EDIT: OK, I see there are replacement cables at clickykeyboards.com, including PS/2 to SDL, but they are all sold out there. Also, what are the chances this model (part no.) doesn't 'know' PS/2? If this cable will work I'll get it.

If you would be willing to ship things out I could use some new LCD monitors

I found an HP lasterjet on the curb a few weeks ago...HAD to pick it up, it was almost brand new looking...has 95% usage on the cartergidge, and still under factory warranty! So I warrantied the rollers, and it's working fine

I threw out an Epson 286 PC and someone liberated it from the dumpster. Probably thought it was a newer pc.

I managed to score an old Panasonic wide carriage 24 pin dot matrix printer years ago in a dumpster. It looked awful, but I cleaned it up real good and bought a new ribbon for it. It worked like a charm. I sold it to a business looking for just such a printer to do invoices.
