I've used a mp3 player for a long time, but never an iPod.
My neighbor, who is a complete PC neophyte recently got a iPod for her birthday. In turn I was setting their family up with what was more or less their first PC too. Well now comes the part when you plug the iPod in, iTunes see's its sould mate and all is right with the musical world right?

Wrong.

iTunes doens't see the iPod. Can't sync. Can't transfer. Nothing.
So I take to my house. Install iTunes, plug in iPod. Same exact thing. Nothing.
WTF am I doing wrong here? I thought this Apple stuff was supposed to be easy for the average idiot. Apparently, I am dumber than the average idiot.

That is a bit weird.

Personally I hate iTunes though. I have an iPod, but just put a portable version of Winamp on it with the iPod plugin to transfer songs to it.

I don't use iTunes, it's the worst program known to man-kind. I use a Foobar2k plug-in to transfer music.

I followed the steps on Apple's website because I lost the manual... iTunes saw it, then it charged it. Text

it IS charging off the USB... but again shouldn't windows itself see it? I get nothing when I plug it in.

After seeing my friends Sandisk player and the simple Drag/Drop it uses, I don't see why anyone would want an iPod. It's just so easy to load Music into the Sandisk, no Software/Drivers needed.

My iPod has been real finicky. Though I haven't used it much, I just like the idea of doing everything in an Explorer window. Just select what's wanted, D&D onto the Sandisk drive and after it's tranferred it's good to go.

One issue I had with my iPod was having a newer version of iTunes but an older version of the iPod component. Didn't realize that was an issue until I had to load my iPod in a short period of time once. Error came up and I had no time to download/install. Kinda pissed me off, so I threw it down(figuratively) and didn't use it again for a long while. With D&D in Explorer that would never happen.

I had a problem like this recently. I let a friend borrow my ipod cable and they said that it didn't work. Which was especially weird since it had worked for me the day before, and then worked again when I got it back. I would say that there is something wrong with the ipod, call up apple, tell em whats what they are usually pretty good about this stuff.

drag and drop is fine if you have a small collection.
indexed files for quick search/smart playlists that auto update or build themselves based on years/genres and whatever simple rules you make are much better than drag and drop. hell auto fill is great if you don't have a player that can take your entire collection. automation/quick search is smarter way of doing things. using desktop search like google or copernic is much smarter than digging through directories manually for instance.

i know many n00bs that figured out ipod installation you think techno geeks got their sales figures to where they are now?

did you try reseting the ipod?

I use iTunes with my iPod and it is great for managing a large database of mp3's.

It makes my life easier.
