My first LCD Monitor?

I'm looking to buy my first LCD display to replace my 5 year old 17" CRT and need some help.

I'm currently looking at a couple of Samsung Models: 940B, 940T, 970P
I basically want the monitor for general use, with the occasional game and dvd. Is it worth it to pay extra for the 940T over the 940B? Or would you recommend i save up for the 970P instead? Another dilemma i have is whether to opt for 17" or 19". If the screen quality is just the same, i think I'll just opt for the 17" as i dont really need the extra space, but if the quality detoriates, think I'll have to pay extra for the 19".

Sorry for all the questions, i'm a total noob when it comes to monitors. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

19" monitors are better than 17" monitors. It's not just the extra screen, it's better color, better viewing angles, better response time.

The 970P is certainly a kick ass monitor. You might also want to look into the viewsonic vp930B. That one is also kick ass.

I would cross out the 940T. It has a slow response time. The 940B though is definitely, for it's price, a decent monitor. The 970T improve upon the already decent features of the 940b, but the problem is finding out fi they are worth the extra 200 dollars, from the looks of the specs, probably not.

Thanks for the reply, think I'll buy the 970P since its only an extra £50 over the 940B (i live in the UK). On a side note, whats this twinkling effect i've been reading about? It seems that all LCD monitors exhibit this effect, will it really affect my dvd watching that much?

Must be something with the VA panel monitors. I've noticed this weird 'swarming' on my VP930b in dim colors. Can't be due to the response time accelerator chip because I notice it even when nothing's moving. But it's not that bad, it's hardly noticeable at all to me. Could be this is something else I'm talking about that's specific to the VP930b. Anyway, here's the response I posted to you in the LCD thread.

The 940T's probably a no-no for gaming. The 970P is quite a bit better than the 940B in color reproduction and viewing angles. Is it worth it? Well...that's up to you I suppose. The 940B still has OK colors and viewing angle.

What is 50 pounds, about 100 bucks. I would get the 970P then. It would be worth it. You could also check out the vp930 from viewsonic, if you haven't already, and see which is cheaper. Both monitors kick ass and seem to be on similar grounds.

Let's not confuse the Viewsonic VP930b with the Samsung 930B. Samsung's 930B blows. Viewsonc's VP930b pwns.

I have compared Samsung's TN panels against Viewsonic's VP191b head to head, an d I concluded that TN panels suck so bad they should be burned.
