Ill get a pic soon ... sorry didnt mean to post

Even with my motherboard (A8V deluxe socket 939), I got a pretty good overclock from 1.8ghz.

I got it up to 2.4 ghz

Here are my specs

Asus A8V deluxe socket 939
AMD 64 3000 Winchester
Corsair Value Select 3200 DDR 400 (2gb total)
430 Watt power supply

I want to get higher, but it isnt stable when I bring up the mhz or multiplier just a little. I have the ram on auto right now though. Could overclock the ram and that would probably make it stable.

My bios is 1014. Is that really too high? Does having too much voltage cause the cpu to become unstable? Im a newbie at overclocking. By the way, what is your multiplier at THEMAN? I've run tests on it like Farcry and Prime 95 and its stable right now. But I want to get as high as possible considering the fan is a stock fan

Some guy on this Forum said he got his to 8 x 356mhz= 2.85ghz on stock fan. I want to get around there
Too bad my mobo htt is locked at 300mhz and multiplier 9

This was his specs

Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester @ 8x356 ~2.85ghz (stock cooling) 1.65vcore 49c-load
Patriot DDR400 2x512mb 2.5-4-3-5.
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
eVGA 7800GTX KO ACS3 Edition

it's a winny, 1.65 should be fine, dont go over 1.75
besides even SDs and venice can run under 1.65 with air
and what exactly is ur ram module

No problem with the volt going over 1.7. That is where it is locked on my mobo. CPUZ says that currently my ram is 220mhz(this is on auto).

eh? 1.65v is still high for a Winchester. You shouldn't be going over 1.6v on stock cooling with any 90nm A64 unless you like taking risks.

oops just did a check, 1.75 is for nc, dun go over 1.65 on any 90nms
or errr just watch the temps

Thanks. Can you guys help me go through to getting 2.7Ghz.
It seems as if each time I try to bring up the mhz or multiplier...it crashes.
If I overclocked the ram I could get a higher speed right? Or since it is on auto, it wouldnt matter?

My hyperthreading is 1000, something else is on 16bit and also another thing. Yet it says it is running at 1700mhz in bios. But in windows it is 2400mhz. Confused.

Don't expect too much from a Winchester with a stock fan. No offense, but they weren't that great as overclockers except for a few of the early chips. I'd say stick with 2.4 ghz, though you really should bring your vcore down to 1.6v or lower.

alright. You guys are probably right about bringing down the vcore. Thanks
By the way. I got the chip around January of last year. Is that a early chip?

I have a question. I have Corsair Value Select DDR400 PC 3200 ram. (2gb) the memory's burst length is 4 beats. Can I change it too 8? Would that make my overclock and computer faster and better? also if i add more voltage to my ram (currently at 2.7) I would get a better overclock right? If I bring my cas latency from 2.5 to 2.0 that would make it faster also right?

1). No idea what changing the burst length would do for you
2). You can increase the stability of your RAM by raising vdimm sometimes, and it's usually safe to do this to 2.9v, but it's not guarenteed. Some ram loves extra voltage, while other RAM will become less stable if you apply too many volts, either due to heat or other issues. In general, try not to overvolt your RAM too much(i.e. don't pass 2.9v) unless you've got extra cooling measures for it. Be sure to use memtest to check stability after you start messing with vdimm.
3). Reducing your CAS timing from 2.5 to 2.0 should improve memory performance, though by how much, I can't say.

1.7 is fine for a winchester. I ran my 3000+ at 2.6 at 1.65 for a long time, temps on the stock cooler were only 53C load.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, or wondered the same thing, but I didn't see anywhat that you stated how many dimms you got, 2x1gig, or 4x512. If you are running 4 dimms, try taking 2 out and that may allow you to clock a bit higher. NEARY EVERY high clock attempt I have seen, the gurus doing it, claim better clocks with ONLY 2 sticks. Just a suggestion.

You may need better cooling to get your chip clocking any higher. Also, some chips just hit a brick wall at a certain speed. There's nothing you can do about that - it's luck of the draw.

Btw: I got my 3200+ winnie to 2.4GHz on stock cooling and voltage.

I don't know if I would put the voltage that high. Search on google for electromigration.

Keep your hyperTRANSPORT (not threading) at around 1000. Example, if you raise the FSB to 300, lower the hypertransport multi to 3x for a 900MHz hypertransport speed. (4x would get you 1200MHz, and thats too high).

I got my Opteron 144 to 2.7GHz on stock voltage.

Personaly I would find the max stable at stock voltage core for better life and stability. Either way get a better H/S I personally like the BIG ThermalTake Big Typhoon!! Its a monster! Also if you get it change the 120mm fan it comes with its a wimpy 1800rpm for a high speed one! I got my 3200+ Venice at 2.4 240x4 HTT right now on stock core voltage I can get 2.5 but a little unstable but I belive its the cheap ram I have. My temp has yet to break 45c.
