My first PC Game

At 60 years of age I finally tried out my first PC game. I downloaded the demo for Wings of Prey.

The last time I found myself needing to learn more and learn faster was when the hired girl took me upstairs to the attic in order to show me a secret.

I was going to buy it from Steam for $15 but have read numerous posts about the sucky DRM they are using in addition to what Steam throws on. After reading about this along with me, my Cat put his paw on my shoulder and winked at me with his good eye. He wears a patch over the other one.

But I think flight sims are really cool! So far it's the only game I have looked at that really got me excited.

ANy suggestions about other really good ones? I understand a Russian bloke is finishing up the successor to IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946, another game I have read good things about. But Wings of Prey looks better to me than IL-2 right now.

And suggestions about a kickass mouse, keyboard, and gizmos like the x-52 and the TrackIR would be really appreciated!

Wings of Prey was probably the worst one you could have started with. STEAM and YuPlay on top of each other are a recipe for failure. Just so you know if theres ever any issues you have to reregister the game. Do it 3 times and thats it, you cant play it any more.

Sad thing is the game itself is darn fun.

THAT is why so many people are upset about this! I despise DRM in general, but if I BUY this and have trouble with it I run the risk of not being able to use it?

Yup. Any time theres a glitch the thing will ask you to activate or register again. And those are limited. When you burn them all up thats it, you are done playing. And as of yet I have not found a crack on the internet that actually works. The cracks I have found I think are just to get rid of the disc check in the DVD version. But if you have the Steam version thats a moot point.
And you always need YuPlay running in the back, logged in. Thats where the problems occur.

If you run out of the 3 activations, you can contact the to get an additional 10.

YuPlay is only required for multiplayer, you can simply close it and play offline normally.

Ummm, that has not been my experience at all.
The game calls home to Yuplay every time you wanna go into the campaign, skirmish or MP. The only thing you can do without yuplay is edit some of the settings. And I tried getting more permissions and no one ever got back to me. Harrassed Valve and they said it was Yuplay. After weeks of emails, the Yuplay people never took care of me.

Hmmm, I'm still on the fence about even trying this out. A little more digging around and it appears this YuPlay is truly awful. Considering that, it's almost a certainty there'll be few, if any, people playing this game online.

But again, I do see forum posts stating the single player portion doesn't require YuPlay, you don't see an option to simply cancel it?

It's a good idea to stay away from anything with install limits/online activation/required internet connection unless you are fully prepared to deal with any problems that would come up related to the DRM.

An alternative would be GOG.com which carries older classic games and has no DRM what so ever. Just a .exe you download for the game without any activation/install limits/anyhting preventing you from copying or backing up your games.

To find what you like I suggest metacritic & youtube.

Usually they do, but when I first bought Wings Of Prey they most certainly did not. I know cuz I looked.
After all the issues I complained through Steam to customer service. They said they couldnt help and no refunds allowed.
Next day I saw the page for the game had been changed to show the Yuplay requirement. I was ticked.

Developer's must not realize people hate DRM and the more intrusive and irritating it is the more likely it is to be cracked & pirated.

This game doesn't sound worth the hassle at any price.

I would have gladly bought the game, it's the coolest flight sim I've seen so far. But with the DOUBLE garbage of both Steam's and Starforce's DRM implementation?
