Hi there!!
Get ready to follow along as, for the first time ever, I build a computer. Here is what I've decided on:

SX1030b case (delivered already)
KT7A-raid mobo (delivered already)
1.2ghz (266) tbird (Waiting for a little price drop before purchase)
512 pc133 cas2 sdram (delivered already)
sb-live! (x-gamer) (On it's way)
geforce2 (ultra? gts? 32? 64? depends how patient I am..) (waiting)

Here is my question...well, my first...I'm sure I'll have many.
Could anyone possibly suggest a nice, quiet, simple hsf for my tbird? I don't really plan to overclock (certainly not right away), I'm just looking for something that will be nice and quiet and do its job well. Someone else had suggested a Vantec FCE-62540D from coolerguys to another person a few days ago. Also, any things I'll need besides the hsf itself...and things I'll need to pay attention to while installing it. Sorry for all the questions, I'm sure I sound pretty ignorant to everyone Thanks in advance..I'm positive I'll have more questions soon enough!

I personally use the FOP32-1 (Global Win?). Its not too loud in my opinion, and yet flows 26 cfm. Also its not too expensive.

Get a good heatsink and a quiet fan. Check out www.coldcpu.com. They have good cooling stuff.I have the Alpha Pal6035 with the 38cfm fan. Tey sell the same heatsink with a quieted fan too. I think it is 23cfm or something close. Which would be a lot quieter. They are, as are most socket A heatsinks, fairly aggrivating to install.

umm..just my opinion here, there is no such thing as not overclocking right away!!! with a setup like that, that kt7a will be dying to be tweaked. please don't deny it the pleasure of a possible 150fsb.. I would definatly recommend you get a good hsf because if you are putting a system like that together you must have all intentions of that 1.2 hitting 1.4 and beyond. I would say the fop32 also... I use the fop38, its loud but it rocks

I have the exact setup and suggestion as john2houston. An Aplha PAL 6035 with the Sunon fan from 2cooltek. Great service, fast order processing (only 3 hours from the time I ordered, I already had a shipping confirmation!!) and good price. 25 + 4.45 shipping 2cooltek

Along with the GlobalWin FOPs and Alphas, I would also suggest Taisol's CGKs. The stock fan is one of quietest, but still performs well.

Check one of these out, nothing without peltiers or water cooling can touch this heatsink and I seen a review where they changed the fan to a super quiet one and it still performed very well. They also ran it without a fan and it only got to like 62 or something like that and stopped. You are gonna drop a chunk of change on one of these. If I wasn't gonna water cool (as I can afford it) then I would buy one of these.

nerdsbyte.com has a nice selection of hsf's with a lot of different fan selections at very good prices. The taisol 742 with the delta 30 cfm hsf combo is the one I am using. Does a good job with very moderate noise levels. They also sell the alphas at some good prices.

I've bought from them a couple of times. Shipping has been prompt and the shipping charges are among the cheapest. link

I have the kt7a Raid and non-Raid, I am now reading that the IWill KK266 may be better than it. You might want to check up on that mobo first, good luck.

Alpha PAL 6035 with 26cfm Sunon 60mm fan. Bought from plycon.com. Shipped to my house within 4 days. Good cooling, and EASY to install with the new clip.

GlobalWin makes good heatsinks. 32-1 and 38 are the same heatsink, just different fans.

A heatsink is really quiet. It is the fan that makes all the noise. The gains made by going to a higher CFM fan are not all that great. The breakeven point seems to me to be around 33~38 CFM. More than that, and your CPU will not cool down by too many degrees.

That being said, get a quiet 80mm fan that pushes 33~38 CFM. Also buy an adapter which you can find in the For Sale/Trade forum. Then you will have good air cooling with a minimum amount of noise.

Look at Gizzo's fan page for a list of good fans to add to your heatsink.

I got the FOP32++ from 2cooltek. It's basically the FOP32-1 with a delta fan. Sweet, but loud and only at the same price for a FOP32.

Which one is louder - the Fop32-1 or the Alpha Pal6035?

Which is the better option for the 1.2 gigger?
