I have a friend who is 31, doesn't have a job, still lives it at home, etc. He's actually never moved out and hasn't had a job in a few years. He's adopted and their only child. I often think his mom doesn't want him to leave the house. There's some weird, made for Jerry Springer shit going on.

He drinks a lot and almost everytime I see him he's carrying around a case of beer.

My roommate is friends with him too, and they were hanging out last night. I noticed my friend brought over a 12 pack of keystone light. I got up this morning and noticed the 12 pack, empty. He was probably only over for 3 hours or so. He's also only 5'5 and maybe 135-140 pounds.

Isn't that a lot to drink in one sitting for no reason? It was a monday night.

A 12 pack between two people in three hours? That's two beers an hour per person. Not much especially if he doesn't have anywhere to be.

If his parents haven't kicked his lazy ass out by now I doubt they are going to, so there's not much hope for him.

Maybe I just roll with some pretty heavy drinkers myself but I wouldn't say a 12-pack in three hours is really all that much if you haven't got anywhere to be. What do his parents think about it?

He probably has a drinking problem, but the other stuff you've mentioned sounds like the larger issue. Quitting drinking would certainly help, but he needs to have a reason to want to. Getting out and finding a job would introduce responsibilities that might preclude drinking all the time.

A 31 year old with an allowance? wtf

Pretty much. It's not so much that they give him a weekly allowance, but that they just always give him money to get by.

It's his parents that I think are the problem. They've never given him a reason to get out. They just coddle him and make excuses for him. He's adopted and their only child.

I came into the thread to argue that some people just like a drink.

But this guy is 31 he needs to grow out of the "getting drunk on a monday" mentality, or he needs to accept he is an alcoholic.

Sounds like an alcoholic to me. One binge drinking episode doesn't make one, but it sounds like he's doing similiar stuff a lot. I'm not a doctor though.

they give him an allowance

Yeah, small wonder why this guy is in the situation he's in. Like others have said it's not the alcohol that's the problem although it sure as hell ain't helping.

Sounds like he needs a firm push in the right direction.

Not exactly an alarming amount of beer to drink in 3 hours, but like everyone else has mentioned, it sounds like it's a regular thing for him. He might be in that "need to have at least a 12'er each night" rut. If that's the case he might need help. If it's occasional then whatever, lots of people drink like this.

Is there a point to this thread, or do you just want to know if that's a lot to drink?

Yes, that's a lot for one person to drink, and he probably left because you were out of beer.
