Well how about you get a laptop that meets her needs. What's the point of a video card or a top of a line cpu if she's just gonna listen to music?

Donate the rest to charity. wtf is wrong with you people?

i really want her to get that, but she's evil and dl's music, so that's a problem with gettting limewire or winmx on a mac.

Buy her the Powerbook, then teach her the evils of Limewire and WinMX and show her the blessing that is DC++, and all will be well

Go ThinkPad with like every option and upgrade available. If you don't like that, get an AlienWare or Voodoo or some other high-end laptop.

Second choice is a Dell Lattude 600 with similar specs, you might be able to get a longer / better warranty including coverage against accidents.

Also get accessories like software, spare battery, case, etc.

Let the leftover $2K or so go to charity, it's not a waste to fund a food bank.

Or the Red Cross. All these hurricanes - they're hurting for funds.

Spending $5K on a laptop is a total, and complete waste of money.

The $5K laptop today will be purchasable at $3.5K about two months from now.

You should spend no more than about $2K on a laptop; that can get you a top of the line Dell/Toshiba if you shop correctly.

If you want the pretty Magnesium casing with then neon lighted keys, yeah sure, pay the extra $1K for that crap

If your friend has money to throw away, have him throw it my way.

buy her a laptop made out of pure GOLD

otherwise i agree..ugh.even w/ $1500 to $2000 she can get a VERY nice one...and give the rest to charity if possibly. I would feel like a fool buying a $5000 laptop for my wife for her myspace surfing and listening to radio....but i would feel better getting one for $1200 and give the rest of the money to some good cause.

edit:

hey your laptop looks exactly like the one i just got from HP (compusa) for $899 after MIR

have u read the 1st post of this thread? She has $5000 to kill and it's not like she's wasting her money. it'd be more of a waste to not spend it all, and i know that it's value will depreciate very shortly, but what can she do about it? getting a $1000 wont do any better.

what she's looking for is longevity, thin and lightweight, long battery life, 15" screen or so, and with a penitum m 2.0ghz or so. i've looked at sony, ibm, toshiba, compaq, voodoo, abspc, alienware, dell, hp, and emachines, and have yet to see the perfect one. of course i can easily choose a laptop that's $5000, thick, heavy, short battery life, and etc, but those are not what she wants. it seems that an apple ibook is what's best for her...

I have to agree.

unless you want a high-end, portable desktop/gaming machine, there's no point in spending $5K.

for websurfing/music/movies, any sub-2K machine will do the job. maybe $3K if you went with a fully-loaded powerbook or viao.

thin and light means a 12.1" or 14.1" screen. Once you move up to 15" it adds a pound or two, and battery life drops as well.

<broken record> Thinkpad or Dell </broken record>

Both offer 14.1" display thin/light models, and the 1024x768 display on the Dell Latitude D600 I'm setting up for work right now is quite nice.

Also, there's no reason to get more than a 1.6 - 1.7 GHz for what she's doing, since they're at least as fast as a P4 2.x GHz. A slower CPU could mean less heat, less noise, longer battery life.

get an ibook if you can deal with OS X

otherwise, if you're looking for thin and lightweight, you're looking at a thinkpad or a viao.

the problem is the $5,000 requirement. laptops in that price range are almost always 10 lb desktop replacements.

Most of the super thin and light notebooks are pretty expensive too.

And a fully pimped out powerbook can go well beyond $5k. The 15" one is only 5.7lbs IIRC. Not too bad.

If not a powerbook how about a Sony Vaio The Tr series
has the look girls like and a webcam for all the myspace pictures. Better yet how about a x505
which is easily the best looking laptop on the market today.

Pentium M IBM laptop, and get goodies for it (port replicator and nice monitor). Or similar Apple one.
Sony has some that are very light, but I don't know about reliability.

Yes, please ban AssKing, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

As for the OP's request:

This is my dream laptop>Sony VAIO® S Series Notebook . 4.2 lbs and ~5hrs of battery life. ~10hrs if you include the larger battery.

If you have an extra $699, you can get this SWEET ass monitor to make the setup complete. Yeah, it's closer to $6000, but hey, you can get the extra cash.

I'll chime in and agree as well. Spend $2000 for a nice laptop and give the rest to charity (perhaps a hurricane relief fund?). It will not go to "waste" at all; your friend will be happy with her new laptop and she'll be helping others too.

EDIT: your, not you're

This sounds like a plan, everyone wins.

This isn't another of those"My buddy's got XXXX to build a comp..." help me out threads is it?

Get something decent and take the tax deduction on the rest. You have something against a charity getting a few sorely needed bucks?
