i'm going to the apple store later this week wtih her so i can try to persuade her to get a powerbook, since it's the closest to perfect i've been looking for her. i dont intend on getting the best laptop ever. $3000 is perhaps the most that will be spent (on an apple of course), and rest will go to wutever charity her uncle intended for it to be. IMO, laptops are much harder on deciding what to get, because there's a reason why it's call a laptop: mobility. and because she is looking for just that, she'll want a big screen, 2.5-3hr battery life or more, great performance for several yrs, looks, and a reputationally good warranty and support. desktop pc's, however, is far much simpler to decide. i'd like to thank all of you for being positive and logical. in 99.9% of cases, who has this much to spend on a system and just simply needs somthing that she can do her hmwk with, chat, dl music, and etc. for me, i'll always know what i should get because i'll always have a budget and a more designated purpose for the computer.
to me, it's like asking some of you, "if you live alone and have $1 million to spend on any home for free within a certain time period and you can only get 1 home and that's it, what would you get?" a $1 million home? or a $200,000 home and rest goes to charity? of course a house does not depreciate in value like technology does, but since you can take advantage of that for free, why not take advantage of it? note that my friend and i are no where near greedy. in reality, if i won $10 million, i'd put $5mil of it in the bank and the other $5 goes to charity. i of course live off interest.
also, some of you guys, such as assking, stated that my friend and i are stupid, greedy, spoiled, and stuck-up rich people who dont care about others. dude, tens of thousands of $ (perhaps hundreds) are already being given to charity by her family, and u guys are pissed that by not giving more is selfish? i find irony in that. $ has it's purpose and it's to purchase anything of value, and giving money away to others is purchasing something for them, which can be shelter, food, wutever.
