Get something decent and take the tax deduction on the rest. You have something against a charity getting a few sorely needed bucks?

if you dont like threads like these, might as well stay out of the GH forums.

i already thought of that, but she just wants to keep everything simple. and she's already rich up the butt. her dad's a lawyer and gives her everything she wants.

Get the latest Mac laptop - the one with the 17 inch wide screen.

Plain, simple, easy to use, and she wont be gaming much. Plus, it'll use up at least some of the monies.

Sorry, but i think that you misunderstood me. No insult to the poster intended.

I just get bonkers over "let me spend gobs of $$$$" just so "I can say I did" threads. Don't get me wrong - seeking advice on a build, counting the cost, are legit and I'll try to help if I can, but trying to suck every penny out of a gift, just so someone else cannot share in someone's generosity - come-on now, that's a bit too much.

sigh 5k and not getting a Voodoo, Hypersonic or Falcon NW...
sigh what a waste on some POS mass produced fashion statement PC...
IBM HP etc are all crap... they are throwaways when its time to upgrade..
at least the high end custom built ones can be mega upgraded stay current for many more years.

i really want her to get that, but she's evil and dl's music, so that's a problem with gettting limewire or winmx on a mac.

I had limewire on my iBook without issues. If she wants simple, small and powerful I think the Powerbook would be great!

did you notice voodoo or falcom notebooks are mostly gaming notebooks? which means they are like 8-10lbs. eww...

tell her to buy something thin and light that has a pentium M processor. you do not need the 15in. display or the 64mb video card built in. it will only make the laptop bulkier and have less battery life. also, do not get a voodoo or some falcon notebook, it's just an overkill.

You should spend no more than about $2K on a laptop; that can get you a top of the line Dell/Toshiba if you shop correctly.

If you want the pretty Magnesium casing with then neon lighted keys, yeah sure, pay the extra $1K for that crap

If your friend has money to throw away, have him throw it my way.

Yeah. It's certainly not my money, but consider this - would you rather pay an overpriced, exhorbitant amount, for a high-end "name-brand" laptop, over and over the needs of the user, and in the process pad the wallets of fat-cat computer-company execs that send american jobs overseas and let working americans down, or would you rather get the best laptop possible, in terms of properly matching the user's needs, and let the rest of the money serve a useful purpose, helping others?

Just get something light and has great battery life. If you get some big and powerfull Falcon/Voodoo etc it'll weigh a ton of bricks and not last an hour.

You do realize that education can help your position in life, rather than simply blaming others for it, right?
Might I suggest starting regular trips to the library as a start? Or would that cut into your social plans with your "homiez".

THE ULTIMATE ZING!

Seriously... get a good laptop and give the rest to a church or something. Or put the money towards the payments for her past family member. I hear funerals are way expensive.

i'm going to the apple store later this week wtih her so i can try to persuade her to get a powerbook, since it's the closest to perfect i've been looking for her. i dont intend on getting the best laptop ever. $3000 is perhaps the most that will be spent (on an apple of course), and rest will go to wutever charity her uncle intended for it to be. IMO, laptops are much harder on deciding what to get, because there's a reason why it's call a laptop: mobility. and because she is looking for just that, she'll want a big screen, 2.5-3hr battery life or more, great performance for several yrs, looks, and a reputationally good warranty and support. desktop pc's, however, is far much simpler to decide. i'd like to thank all of you for being positive and logical. in 99.9% of cases, who has this much to spend on a system and just simply needs somthing that she can do her hmwk with, chat, dl music, and etc. for me, i'll always know what i should get because i'll always have a budget and a more designated purpose for the computer.

to me, it's like asking some of you, "if you live alone and have $1 million to spend on any home for free within a certain time period and you can only get 1 home and that's it, what would you get?" a $1 million home? or a $200,000 home and rest goes to charity? of course a house does not depreciate in value like technology does, but since you can take advantage of that for free, why not take advantage of it? note that my friend and i are no where near greedy. in reality, if i won $10 million, i'd put $5mil of it in the bank and the other $5 goes to charity. i of course live off interest.

also, some of you guys, such as assking, stated that my friend and i are stupid, greedy, spoiled, and stuck-up rich people who dont care about others. dude, tens of thousands of $ (perhaps hundreds) are already being given to charity by her family, and u guys are pissed that by not giving more is selfish? i find irony in that. $ has it's purpose and it's to purchase anything of value, and giving money away to others is purchasing something for them, which can be shelter, food, wutever.

Just get a really expensive laptop (VoodooPC maybe) and get every accessory. Port replicator, LCD, keyboard and mouse, speakers....you get the idea.

You don't have defend yourself to internet geeks.

I for one, would have spent ALL of the money on myself (if it was given to me). Fvck charity. But then again, I'm a greedy bastard.

Exactly what i was going to say... get the X505 since she doesn't game and already has a desktop. She'll want something really portable. If not the X505, how about Fujitsu T70H.

i say get a kickass laptop that she will love, with all the options and best warranty.

then the rest of the $$ should go to charity -- what's wrong w/giving $$ to charity?

your girl's dad is rich, so i wouldn't sweat it to much

or you can buy it from me...i'm a reseller.

shut the fvck up you piece of pvssy. you dont know any fvcking thing about me so dont make stupid assumptions. so wut if her uncle gave her $5000 to kill on a laptop. you dont think $100k+ has been already given to charity. because she has so much to spend also, i've never decided to spend that much you stupid dick. we've always had in our mind about giving the rest of the money to the homeless like you.
Dude, don't pay any attention to AssKing.
Yeah. See, most of us get two things:
1. You're probably not a selfish bastard.
2. Not being used to having this kind of money for these things, you don't want to waste it.

And this is an opportunity. If anything will be able to serve well for several years in the computer world, it's a laptop. I know several people who can't keep themselves from upgrading their main systems any less than once a year, but 4-5 year old laptops are just barely starting to be too slow for the apps being run on them, and there are really only two upgrades that matter: optical drives and RAM; Apples (G3s), Dells, and IBMs. While I don't own one , I've had the pleasure of using some light Pentium M laptops, and they are simply awesome. I haven't used any Apple ones, but from the few people I know who love their powerbooks, and are otherwise x86 only folks, they must be pretty awesome (and you do have to admit, Apple and Sony are the only ones with any real style in design--since this is a chick we're dealing with, that can matter).

Again, IMO, a solid $2k or under laptop is a good bet. Little wasted, you can get good quality for that price, and have plenty left over to both add goodies (port replicator, extra battery packs, etc.), and still have plenty more to get left to whatever charity it goes to.
