Very true. My daughter, though, was beautiful from the first breath.

My son wasn't nearly as pretty a newborn, but he is a very cute boy now.

Of course everyone things their own kids aren't ugly

All babies are ugly - period

Explain why I think some of my friends' babies aren't ugly at all? There's normal looking, then there's just freaky looking, there are both. It doesn't have to be cute vs. ugly.

There's some poor kids that look like they went through a meat grinder on the way out. They have forcep scars, smashed heads, eyes bugging out, wrinked up faces, ect.

Other's come out pretty "normal" looking. Our daughter was born natural...but she was a runt (under 5 pounds) so she wasn't putting up much of a fight on the way out. Parent or not, she's one of the cuter looking newborns I've seen.

Sorry, but that's your genetic wiring or whatever talking. Hopefully she starts looking more like her mom.

The qualifier on that is *compared to other newborns*.

At first I thought ours were fine, but looking back at pics, they look a ton better now than they did before.

i had a roommate a long time ago that had a kid. he was a long hair pretty boy, she was fairly hot as well. their son, at 11 months, was always grumpy and crying, had that sunked eye look like this one and a red mohawk from laying on the floor crying, spinning in circles. it literally wore the hair off his head. he was hideous. i have yet to see any baby that odd looking, and doubt i ever will

all 3 of my kids were and still are adorable when they were born. if i remember, ill scan a pic of my twins at a month old and youll see.

You were born at 26 weeks? wow. They say the ideal minimum is 34 weeks otherwise you have respiratory and mental development issues. I know of someone's child being born at 30 weeks and he has yet to step foot outside the hospital. Quite sad they drive to the hospital just to see their child everyday.

Well, depending on who you ask, I still have mental development issues.

I was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for about three months, I think. My twin brother was in the NICU for five months until he died.

Most of the complications I had as a result of being premature ended before I could really remember anything. I remember going through physical and speech therapy up until I was five or so, I was in the special needs program up through Kindergarten because of my delayed motor skills. I still stutter from time to time.

The most pervasive issue I've seen in my life is my lung capacity. From the time I was six until I was 11, I'd get coughs from September through May, deep chest coughs. They never did figure out what caused it, but they hypothesized that it was due to my lungs being underdeveloped when I was born. I still have trouble sometimes with exercise-induced asthma, but that's also partially due to just being out of shape.

Funny thing is, I turned out ok, at least I think I did. 6'1", big guy (currently overweight, ), can run a mile, got my master's degree, etc. Never underestimate how hard childhood can be for preemies, though.

Orsorum sorry to hear about your brother. My wife and I were scared shitless when she had preterm labor with the twins at 30 weeks. Doc had to give steroids so the babies' lungs would develop faster just in case they popped out. She spent 6 weeks on very strict bedrest, then we were in the clear at 36 weeks, though they still spent 2 days in the NICU. I can only imagine what your parents went through those months.

Agreed. Newborns look pretty scary. Movies and TV almost always use babies that are at least 6 months old for those newborn shots you see.

On TV they usually come out with a full head of hair and say "Mama!". Sometimes they have those cute little overalls on.

our doc induced labor at 36 weeks, my twins were huge. vaginal birth also, in front of 26 docs and students. apparently the babbys were bigger than they should have been, they were 12 lbs total at 36 weeks, which is one of the reasons the doc wanted them born. neither spent extra time in the hospital tho, thankfully. my first son was born at 27 weeks and only lived a day, it really sucked.

Human babys come out way early. I mean a calf can walk a few hours after birth. I was watchin a doco and it was saying that human babies have developed brains and under developed bodies.

I mean human babies are freaking retarded and cant fend for them selves.

rh71, I don't really know how they survived it, my parents have talked about it a few times, but it's definitely something that left some scars on both of them.

I am lucky that I lived to be where I am, and that I turned out relatively normal. I know a lot of preemies don't make it period or have serious, long-lasting disabilities as a result of their early birth.

Hanoverphist, I'm sorry to hear about your first son. My sister miscarried with her first and I know she still considers that her first child.

The reality of it is that most babies are butt-ugly when you look at them dispassionately...especially those under a few months old. As they age, they MAY get cuter and better looking, but that's not a guarantee...many babies start to resemble their parents early...and their looks could stop a clock.

I've pissed off many new parents because I refuse to look at pics of their new babies.

"Here, these are pics of our newborn son."

"No thanks, I don't like babies."

"ha-ha, that's funny. Here...see how cute he is?"

"Look, I told you once, I don't like babies and don't want to see the pics."

"Geez, but he's so cute. Here, take a look!"

"OMFG! That baby is FUGLY! Did they drop it on its face in the hospital?"

I was an ugly looking baby when I popped out. 10.5# with the biggest head on record at the hospital (also a month overdue, was not coming out, fuck the real world). My face looked like rocky's after one of his epic boxing matches.
