I had similar problem with you 30gig IBM. It wouldn't boot. So I ran the IBM diagnostic-utility which did find errors. I then did a low-level format, re-installed everything and everything worked again.

When I get a new HD at my next upgrade, I might get a Maxtor. Won't get another IBM.

<< This would be the third WD 120-160GB death story I've heard in the last month. >>

You're going to hate to hear this, but whoever sold you that 160GB WD drive really took you for a ride. The highest the WD drives go is 120GB.

How long had you had this hard drive? I try to give my drives about a month before I load them up with anything major that I don't want to lose because I just don't have enough money to go out and buy more hard drives and a RAID card. I've had pretty good luck with WD drives as a whole though. I had two IBM 75GXP and they both failed, however, both of my 40GB WD drives are pulling strong. I'm just running out of space.

Ouch!
I believe I'd take that HD down to the nearest Best Buy and start slamming some heads with it!
Doesnt matter if you bought it there or not...somehow it has to be their fault.

but seriously..be paranoid. something that spins at 7200rpm (probably all day all night) might die at any time

Well... simple fact of Computer parts.... there is always some that die. Especially with HD's it is known that the first couple weeks are critical. HD's are either DOA or close to it or last quite a long time. You'll hardly see drives fail after 6month to a year... it's either pretty early or then pretty late. There is a reason why they give you 3 year warranty
Heck... I have some at home that re 5 years old and more and still are humming.

That you had that happen sucks but................

It just show that all the hype about IBM drives was just that. The more drives you sell, the more that will fail!

Im no fan of IBM but my 75 series drive is about 1 1/2 years old and my 60 series is about a year and both going strong. I do put a fan (not me) in the drive cage though.

i only have the drive mirrored for the first couple months of usage. mostly just have it on and spinning, copy some things to it, install a game or something that doesn't have much in the way of config files. what do i care if UT with no mod packs dies? i reinstall... big deal. plus you don't have all the guys at WD watching your hard core porn collection. all they see is UT and q3 or whatnot.

I share my pr0n! Maybe if I sent in a drive for RMA they'd be so thankful I'd get an extra drive back

LMAO. You better have your receipt so they don't scream fraud. Also, tie that drive to the end of a bat. I'd hate to see you hurt your hand.

Another one bites the dust.

My WD 120gb died tonight...before had a chance to freakin use the thing.

It wouldn't format properly in w2k for some reason (probably DOA), so I formatted it FAT32 in DOS. Then, I decided to ghost my hdd instead. After the ghost, all I got was clicks . Even as a slave, nothing but clicks, no longer posts.

Anybody have any RMA experiences with DELL?

Gonna call them in a couple of hours.

This is the first WD drive I've owned (out of about 10). Not exactly getting off on the right foot, are we?

Do you have on-site or collect and return? I've had a few harddisks give me problems where I had on-site support, they just send someone along with new harddisks who replaced the old one and tried to transfer data from it.

My bad, I didn't specify that I only bought the drive from DELL.

I just need to know how long I should expect the turnaround to be.

I plan on sending them the drive this morning via USPS Priority.

<< amen for cd-rs. >>

Word. If you have a collection of any size of data (i.e.: lots of MP3s, videos, etc.), I would definitly make the investment of time and money to sit down and take as many CD-Rs as it takes to backup your important data. I backed up my 18GB of MP3s (now 20GB) last semester onto about 20 CD-Rs or so- not expensive, and the piece of mind is priceless (not that I'm forseeing either of my 2 Western Digital drives to go down, but I sure as heck am not gonna lose my classic Jethro Tull collection, among others!). Besides, if you have BURN-PROOF, it's not like you can't do other things while you're backing up! Like ATOT!

This is why I setup a completely separate system with Ghost Enterprise Edition on it (although making those damn boot floppies was a pain).
